To Accompany You
If I were to accompany you
for a mile on your journey
I would be astonished by your beauty
and enchanted by our common humanity -
your children I would consider as my own
and your parents as due my honour and respect
governments who try to make us be enemies
would be invisible to us and we’d live without them …
though on occasion, noting their military might in the sky
we’d gather friends, find some musicians
and dance and sing together until the fighter jets
fell out of the sky with nothing left to do.
