Gathering
Across the street there used to be...
A big ol' Elephant Leg Tree
Where came a flock of Groove-Billed Ani daily...
They'd gather first in twos and threes
to clamber all about the tree...
visiting and chittering away......
When numbers reached
a tipping point
the flock just up and blew the joint...

True... the tree died... fungus got it... more's the pity.
And so the Ani go elsewhere for their morning chat and gossip...
We have settled for the ubiquitous Sparrows... seasoned with Hummingbird and Oriole and the Chile Rojo of the occasional Cardinal. ely

I call those birds shit birds....seen them waiting under a horses ass and when the dung drops the have a feeding frenzy. Maybe they gravitate towrds decaying things.

Re: Re. Gathering
They're feeding on insects stirred up by the livestock and attracted to the dung.
They are close cousins with the Roadrunner...

There's nothing so beautiful as a flock of birds. Well written.

Re. Gathering
Do you think the birds knew the tree would die ? Birds are itinerants and as such dislike a vacuum . . .here you have the sparrow filling the space I read the Ani is in the cuckoo family but does not act parasitically as ours in Europe Nice write Ely Kexby

Maybe... but we lost a huge old Mesquite two years ago when Newton blew through.
I think the colony may have been nesting there... they make a communal nest and share in the raising of the chicks.
They are cousins with the Roadrunner and the Cuckoo... ely
