Grandier
Pere Grandier forgave his flock
Expunged the devils of Loudun
The nuns groveled at his feet
And for their lust he stood accused
The bleak charge one of heresy
Seducing acolytes of God
Defiance of Fathers bent to pray
Envy etched upon their brows
Cast down as a libertine
Subject to torture, searing tongs
Words dragged from his battered lips
A confession encouraged by the rack
Pere Grandier stood at the stake
Flames licking hard at his white robe
He raised his eyes and found the Lord
Would hypocrites die by His Sword?
Expunged the devils of Loudun
The nuns groveled at his feet
And for their lust he stood accused
The bleak charge one of heresy
Seducing acolytes of God
Defiance of Fathers bent to pray
Envy etched upon their brows
Cast down as a libertine
Subject to torture, searing tongs
Words dragged from his battered lips
A confession encouraged by the rack
Pere Grandier stood at the stake
Flames licking hard at his white robe
He raised his eyes and found the Lord
Would hypocrites die by His Sword?

Grandier was apparently quite a stud, and a dynamo with church politics. It backfired, sadly. Thanks, Raven!
Re. Grandier
dearest Sir Crow he was a hero
so unfair of them to stake him
because they burned with lust..
I hope he takes them all down
and tie them to the stake..

He was a hero, sticking to his beliefs when they didn't jibe with the church dictates. Thanks Crim!

Yet another addition to my reading/viewing list...starring my favorite Athos. I view these poems as movie trailer masterpieces 😁 Bravo!

I hesitate to recommend this film due to its grotesque visuals and violence. It still packs a wallop as a story if you can handle director Ken Russell's excesses. Still, Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave are always remarkable, even in a context of religious and sexual hysteria. Thanks Gahdess!

I love the idea of this as a trailer, a condensation of the movie. Coming soon to a theater near you! Thanks, Jadey!

I'm glad you enjoyed this Flower. I know I based this on a movie but it's one I wouldn't recommend to the tender hearted. The poem is mild in comparison. Thanks for the sweet comment!

I have often wondered at them...cloistered and all chaste. Now this is food for thoughts. Although you might have heard the joke about the nuns getting pregnant after a dozen sailors slept over at their nunnery on an island. The nuns didn't even sleep with the lusty bunch.:) love your story, Crowfly.
