I Was Tall Until I Wasn't

Things that were and things that are
Are very different things indeed
Where once I was tall
Tall, sporty, scuffed basketball shoes
Now I am moderate
Normal I guess, working women's shoes
Thoughts were questions, sessions of questions
Now thoughts are a deep galaxy of unexplored images
Questions remain unanswered

We said we could be stronger
We might drown under the sun
I'll always be laying here
Thinking of you

Words that were held back and words that spilled forth
Are very different things indeed
Where once I said this
I now refrain those, pearls that once fell from lips
Now I moderate thoughts
And merely collect and bottle them up
Words were beautiful and meaningless
Now words are slipping away
From under my skin
Words remain unsaid

We said we could be stronger
We might drown under the sun
I'll always be laying here
Thinking of you

What we were and what we are
Are two very different things indeed
Where once you called me full of hope
I look away and let it go, you got four strikes in a three strike game
And I couldn't let you have any more
We could have been something
If we'd really tried

You said we could be thinner
But I might disappear into you
Instead
You'll always be laying there
Thinking of me
