Death Row King

 The media has labelled you the king of death row,
You sit in solitary confinement as usual all alone,
You contemplate sitting on the electric chair throne.

You read a serial killer article in the local paper,
There is yet another murderer at trial, a notorious child killer and a possible usurper to the throne.

Your reign has lasted twenty years,
You have outwitted the justice system,
You have outlived many of your peers,
You have lost countless appeals,
You have never shed a single tear.

You were crowned a serial  killer at trial despite claiming to be innocent,
Kingship was not something you would ever want,
You screamed of a police cover up, claimed they beat you into a confession got you drunk and then planted evidence.
You received letters from concerned citizens,
You joined a church and became a devout Christian,
You completed a degree in theology to banish your previous ignorance,
You married a good woman and act like a gentleman,
Your cell became a castle and the prison a kingdom.

The time for the execution is growing near, outside an angry mob has gathered to cheer your demise.
Your queen is gently sobbing, you refuse any contact as you hate to see anyone cry.
Your only surviving relative, an elderly parent is in a nursing home, a confused dementia patient.
A hungry young reporter is begging for a death bed confession.
Your lawyer is desperate for a reprieve  and is outside the cell phoning, hoping for assistance from the judiciary.
Two books have been published, a film was recorded and you starred in an award winning documentary.
There was a campaign to overturn your conviction and an online petition signed by many.
You have a banquet prepared fit for royalty.
You will be killed in front of all the victims family.
The executioner has arrived and they politely knock.
Your crown jewels were handcuffs they are finally taken off.
You couldn't convince them all but you certainly tricked a lot,
You were guilty all along and were secretly pleased that you killed those Cops. You always hated cops.
