This Anthology of Us

Were it not for distance                      
there would be more                      
than imagery
or 3:00 AM wakenings
to remember dreams               
                     
But napkins, a matchbox                      
from our first restaurant                      
movie stubs from classic                      
remakes; maybe "It"                      
maybe not, we're both                    
full of surprises behind      
popcorn and crumbs
under the sheet                 
                     
I would be pressing                   
dandelions from our      
first peanut butter picnic                      
an autumn leaf  
tricks and treats      
lavender birthday streamer                      
winter's holly berry paint                    
Thanksgiving poetry                      
handmade ornaments                    
New Year's confetti                      
purple birthday streamer                      
( to weave with the lavender      
connecting seasons )                    
Valentine's heart                      
four-leaf clover          
fire-cracker wrapper      
       
onto gray pages                      
of growing scrapbooks                      
                     
Daisy-chained wrists;                      
our first Spring kite            
buttercupped within                      
burgeoning summer heat;                      
dripped copper sweat                      
staining canson sheets                      
as historical testament                        
                     
Because that's what we do                      
isn't it? Adhere moments;                      
preserve togetherness          
Alternate Realities of Universe                 
                     
Assemble our manuscript                      
from steadfast Faith                        
and foundational Belief:                      
                     
Were it not for Love                      
distance would exist                      
                     
Before editing out doubt                      
and preparing for print                  
chapter by chapter             
this ever-becoming
