America Is Desensitized
Has America become desensitized to the loss of black lives
Is this why the higher echelons seem to ignore all of our cries
Is this why there's a disproportionate number of us in jail cells
And why some of these police in the streets put us through hell
Society chooses to focus more on a red, white, and blue cloth
Then seem to overlook our struggles with absolute disregard
Mumia Abu Jamal posed a thought provoking question about if we've ever mattered
There's a long historical redundancy of brutality of us getting bruised and battered
Video after video of them killing folks has sucked out most of my hope
I use this vice of poetry to get through life as a mechanism for me to cope
How can people focus so much on a damn flag
But ignore the untimely deaths of a fellow man
More people would empathize with the demise of a dog
Than they ever would if it was the murder of one of ours
So much hypocrisy and contradiction is cooking up in the kitchen
Call me anorexic because I'm not consuming what's being given

Such deep truth here. I've been trying to break through the racism I see around me for most of my life, since I was 5. It never ceases to amaze me what other white people will say after they look around to make sure no black people are going to hear them. Then they think that because I'm white I won't mind if they use the N word and spew a bunch of racist shit in my face. But no matter how many poems I write against hatred, nothing ever changes. My friends have just learned not to say the N word when I'm around. The more things don't change, the more they stay the same!

Thank you for your honesty and for making an attempt to make a difference. I'm tired of it all. Tired of seeing it, tired of hearing about it and frankly tired of having to write about it but I have to try to make a difference. If I can positively influence at least one person with my poems then I feel I've accomplished part of the mission.
