Pillars of Salt
You see them across the horizon
bitter emblems of statuesque loss
jilted hearts turned pillars of salt
looking contrary to the way they walked
Gazing back to what was destroyed
by brimstone and abandonment
deserted by lovers they once believed
could absolve their emptiness
Condemned to isolated purgatory;
a self-inflicted demise
to an uninhabited Island of one
amid an ocean of bobbing Life
Fly traps of broken-heart
resentful tongues lash out
devouring whole cartilage and bone
to fertilize envy and doubt
Our Spirit doesn't resent their hate
but emits a balm of Belief;
an intercession their pain abate:
a Petition for their Peace
That they learn Forgiveness
for wrongs they each endured
that Love dissolve their bitter salt
through tears of Hope and Trust

A solid, solemn write. They sound like a bunch of sad sacks.
"Fly traps of broken-heart
resentful tongues lash out
devouring whole cartilage and bone
to fertilize envy and doubt"
Always arm yourselves with Hope, Trust and Pepper Spray to fend off any such salty fly traps.

LOL! Noted, Batman! Pillar of Salt Repellant™ in the Batmobile as we speak!
Bitterness and resentment are sad, though not for who they're directed toward. But those harboring them, not realizing they're harboring cancer.
Thank You. 💜

with a chip upon one's shoulder .. :)

Self-punishment is typically the WORST chip on the shoulder, Paul.
It's the most abrasive. Thank you!

i'm jewish, bitterness & grudges are what i do best lol
idk if i wholly agree with you this time vati... there is an [almost naïve] optimism in this beautifully written observation ...some things i've found, are unforgivable... one can move on & not hold the next lover liable for previous offences, but one doesn't need to forgive the aforesaid offender. nope. not even a little.
it's a solid write, a hope filled train of thought in your signature spiritual style... just can't wrap my head around the message

Re: Re. Pillars of Salt
Perhaps it's the definition of Forgiveness.
Forgiveness isn't about the other person or absolving them of the wrong they committed. Forgiveness is about self, so the actions of others don't hold us hostage in bitter resentment, especially toward the happiness of others. Forgiveness is about self so we can move forward openly in Love, having learned what it was we learned from that particular relationship.
I see it too many times out in the world; jaded, bitter people filled with unforgiveness making the lives of those around them miserable because, well, because misery loves company.
I never took you for an unforgiving person. But, rather a " Live and let Live " type. I don't see you as bitter and vindictive. But boy, there are others . . . that have transformed from beautifully open to bitter and vindictive over unrequited Love.
Those are who we pray learn the power of Forgiveness for themselves and their own happiness. ❤

Fantastic write Ahavati! I held on to every word.
These lines...
Fly traps of broken-heart
resentful tongues lash out
devouring whole cartilage and bone
to fertilize envy and doubt
So accurate...resentments metastasise like cancer. It is in the forgiveness, which you described so well above, we heal. We may become changed by what happens to us as a result of other's actions but we have the choice of how that change is manifested...we need not be lessened.

Thanks, Mel! Painful lessons are meant to help us grow. We cannot unless we've forgiven and moved on. Else we stagnate in bitter resentment.

Your images are, as usual, strong and elegant; there's a real sense of loneliness and vast empty space in this poem, like how in Shelley's "Ozymandias" you get the sense of a never-ending desert. The only issue I have is that your lines seem to stand on their own without flowing into each other, giving the poem a plodding "this, then that, then that, then that" rhythm. Just my humble opinion, of course.
