Bouncing Betty
It’s been forty-years
plus twenty
that Bouncing Betty
kicked her shoes off
walked barefoot;
her jungle-rotted toes
buried in the hot soil
of Vietnam and Cambodia.
The landscape
of her awakening
escorted many
into the afterlife.
Even now
her explosive temper
splits survival's aftermath
when her hibernation
is innocently disrupted;
demanding sacrificial blood
as restitution;
or at least a limb.
Most days lack dire circumstance
for the Vietnamese,
who go about daily tasks
set forth by ancestors;
they follow a narrowly lit road
between present shadows
and memory,
shouldering offerings
of vegetables and fruit
upward into the bright
future of tomorrow:
Refugees emerging
from an earthen tunnel;
the carved catacombs
of bloody history
still camped out
in their jungle reality.

Quite impressive if I have to say so myself. It makes me curious about who this girl was. Was she someone in Vietnam after the war there or perhaps she is someone from the ancient times of Vietnam? It is hard to tell and the poem brings many thoughts to me. Impressive.

Thank you. It was an S, or bouncing mine used by American troops in the Vietnamese war. My father served two tours and used to tell me stories. They're triggered by step and release, then launch into the air a few feet before detonating.
Many of them are still buried in the jungles of Vietnam, and have caused extensive casualties and amputees among the Vietnamese civilian population. An American legacy, although our government did offer financial support to assist in the clean up of both our and the Vietnamese mines.
Here's a movie clip that demonstrates it.

Years ago,
I was in the throes
of writing about a young guy
who`s entire platoon had been
blown up by a bouncing betty
with he surviving the blast
and the struggle he faced
or was facing trying to settle
back into his life, post-Vietnam.
with a new wife and their daughter
only to end up battling the same
war with his inner demons ...
I thought it was pretty intense
but sadly I never finished it.
Learned a lot about Vietnam or
the American War as I was
researching for my book.
Sadly, my first cousin
went to Vietnam only to return
home and lived in his bedroom
turning it into a jungle - literally -
with trees, dirt, things of survival.
It was sad `cause he said
he saw things he wished he never had.
Anyhow, a vivid and provocative piece
penned to such a torrid era ...

My father was a munitions expert, no sooner than he got back from one tour he had to return for the second because his successor was killed. The artillary camps were the prime target; no ammo no shoot = sitting ducks. I asked my father once how it felt when the war finally ended. He looked at me and said, "The war never ends for a soldier." Boom. Thank you for sharing, Devlin.

I stand here and applaud You Sage One!
A bold , yes bold, write.
Too easy to be swept away by the current of patriotism and be blinded to reality. This is evocative for it invokes many a tragedies' memories and of a war where there never was truly a winner. For me, as said earlier in many a comments on other pieces, this is what poetry is about, more than just about the trials and tribulations of love, personal life and personal suffering.
It was a no-brainer for an RL add not least for it's delivery.
Two Thumbs Up!

This poem demands a sacrifice as well, as I am blown away upon treading through its stanzas. I have to echo KDAmB about the delivery.

Not heard of a 'Bouncing Betty' until now - it's shameful that some engineers use their 'talents' developing such things. (which is why the Institute of 'Civil' Engineers was founded in 1818 in order to distinguish and distance themselves from 'military' engineers).
On reading the poemI found myself captured very grippingly by the grisly ongoing reality of the aftermaths of war.

How those recollections weave their way through history, then present.
Etched in stone for future generations, as they should be.
Brilliantly written, Ahavati...
