Awakened in the Night

I was startled awake by it,
The smell was fear fermenting.

It was in the dark of the night,
When this thing said to me, I am Sprite.

This thing that spoke I could not see,
It laughed, said, I'm AC-DC.

For a moment I thought I saw,
A dancing gent dressed in straw.

A dark void is something to dread,
Like this thing hovering 'er my bed.

The thing opened a window wide,
I saw it better and I cried.

Yes, I'm a water Sprite to you,
I'll be with you until you're through.

This thing was dressed like a joker,
And was a filthy pipe smoker.

I tend the dead, that is my job
"Why are you here, my breath to rob?"

He settled on the window sill,
And let out a soft little trill.

I know I'm early, so I’ll wait,
My God, its here for my death date.

I quickly turned on the lamplight,
I looked around and no more Sprite.

I have not told a single soul
About my death Sprite's midnight stroll.
