Never
The moment had come
as I hid in the weeds
alongside the alley
that ran through the town,
where other lost boys
don't know nothin' else,
their skinny scab knees
and dirty brown faces.
'Come. Come. Come!' I heard said
from the voice overhead,
with a blithe look of boy
watching mischievously.
I sniffed at the breeze
that carried his scent
remindin' me of
earth pies and tree bark.
As he took my hand
he raised me so high,
then more higher still
till we started to fly!
Where were we going?
I sure didn't know,
but I wasn't scared,
not ever again.
There couldn't be worse
than where I came from
for any lost boy
who never goes back..
Don't know where I'm goin',
and don't really mind;
acceptin' tomorrow,
and not yesterday.
I've taken the dare
as I close my eyes
to make me a wish
and soon I'll be there!
