Of Mary and Little Girls
I was born into picture shows
named after Tammy and the Batchelor
immersed in the "make-love-not-war"
60's tie-dyed/anti-Vietnam movement.
Too young to be a true flower child
I was resolved to television shows
and the music my mother loved --
Tom Jones and Mary Tyler Moore.
I remember her eschewing heels
for flats and skirts for capris
to revolutionize a deep south
right along with Minneapolis.
Me? Well, I got the switch across
my back for tossing my crocheted
beret into the wind on Mississippi
highway I-55 S, just like Mary did.
Wanting me to wear it to class.
Honestly, what did my mother expect?
Looking back, my lessons have been
necesssary, small and big, but always
with the hope of bettering a future
even in these current times of doubt.
Those 70's dreams of making it alone
led to the city and my first apartment
in the 80's, and love all around me
from family, friends, and neighbors.
40 years later and I can say
I made it on my own; I'm here
but, wonder if I would've believed
I could watching only June Cleaver.
We never really know the full impact
one show or personality has upon us
or a smile that exudes happiness
to become the dream of little girls.
And another day, just like Mary now
I'll have finally made it [home] afterall.

look, I know I'm english, but wasn't the mary
tyler moore show the one that began with the
mgm pastiche roaring lion, or was it the one
with the gong...
hell, I don't know, bloody cultural differences...
but I loved the bio...:)

What a delightful poem. And you even won a competition, despite Johnny's grubby fingerprints being on it.

It was probably BECAUSE Johnny's grubby little fingers were on it. He's one of the best critiquers on the site, and we're fortunate to have him. Thank you, Mastermind. 🍷

grew up with the Lone Ranger
drove cars like they were a white stallion
lost my mask somewhere back there
this is aggressive & refined, Like Mary...

This is lovely, perfectly distilled imagery, emotion, lesson and nostalgia. What I have seen other poets here call alchemy. I can see why you took the laurels. My first crush was Batgirl on the old Adam West Batman show. Wowza how she looked in that outfit. lol Congrats bright lady.

my childhood n so many similar feelings n
experiences as perceived by youthful (boy) eyes...amazing piece of writing...
N this? "We never really know the full impact

Had particular impact becuz I've felt this way n shared this thought alot in my life...
Outstanding inking!

used to ride my bicycle past the house where some of the show was filmed in Minneapolis.
Your words resonate in my head.
I enjoyed your words
Thanks

This is the kind of poem that would lend itself very well to being read aloud, I think, due to its colloquial tone and zeitgeist-y themes. I really enjoyed it. It was funny, moving, and a sharp account of a bygone time. x

Too young to be a flower child...
I, too, have had the misfortune of being born in the wrong decade, Ahavati.
A nostalgic piece. Lovely to read. Well done.
