Elusive Mistress
An empty canvas has no voice; It does not see,
or think, or feel, yet it holds the power
of endless possibility and only an artist has the will
to unlock its hidden secrets -
Softly, I trace the unashamed roughness,
feeling such a stark contrast of textures
between her and me; nothing but skin between us.
I want her beautiful, just as she wishes to be.
Her soul is unborn beneath the fabric of time
and like the birth of a star she becomes creation.
There is a certain grace in her that makes me weep
within my joy: she is the art that I will never be.

I see the beauty that overtakes emotions, Kas;
she is everything she was meant to be,
& we can never achieve that.
beautiful...
she is everything she was meant to be,
& we can never achieve that.
beautiful...

Not even the artist who created her can achieve such beauty. All we can do is revel in the afterglow. Thank you for enjoying it with me, John...

This is such greatness 😁 I wish to be an empty canvas some days. This poem also kind of reminded me of childbirth for some reason. The creation of life.
As an art piece it is stunning. And you showed it's beauty well.
Great read 🤗

Thank you for such an amazing comment, DC. I completely agree that it is much like childbirth, as art is creation. As always, I truly enjoyed the visit...

Kasai, your poetry takes on such beautiful imagery and depth. I would hang every one on my walls like a gallery and gaze at them daily. Beautifully done :)

Art is its own beauty once created. However, could never be without us as the Universal conduit. And, being we are, there will always be a piece of us in her arrangement.
Beautiful tribute to art, Kasai.

Kasai...you're first stanza was so inspiring....holding such truth in every way possible...the rest of it just blanketed the perfection of what was witnessed in reading the beginning...

This poem reminds me of a couple of things. Firstly, this short poem, "A Cry", by Sara Teasdale:
"Oh, there are eyes that he can see,
And hands to make his hands rejoice,
But to my lover I must be
Only a voice.
Oh, there are breasts to bear his head,
And lips whereon his lips can lie,
But I must be till I am dead
Only a cry."
Your poem is a lot more uplifting than that dark and sad one, of course, but how you describe the empty canvas (especially as having no voice) called it to mind.
Secondly, I was reminded of a conceptual art piece by an artist whose name I forget, and whom I discovered, incidentally, through an article about film director John Waters and his taste for modern art. The piece was simply this: a blank canvas, placed outside for a long period of time to accrue the damage and alterations made by exposure to nature, through rainstorms and heatwaves and such. I've just this moment remembered, actually, where I discovered that artist and piece: http://bigthink.com/videos/some-of-the-best-art-is-deadly
Your poem is, as I expected, well-written and thoughtful, and it has an innocence about it, a kind of sweet intellectual open-mindedness, a willingness to follow thoughts wherever they might lead, which is very compelling and refreshing. Thank you for the read.
