Leap of Faith
At arm's length
from the ocean's jagged teeth
the last of the dolphins disappear
There is only foam
and the sigh of surf
each inrush
a terrible booming breath--
not even a gull
could bob here
The cove beckons,
dark walls
flexing a twisted toe
where waves rush to worship
and then die at the land's feet
Unpicking locks in the air
the sailor's nerve
frets shifts in the wind
manic eye unravelling distance
courting sterner shadows
under all knowing crosses
splintering hungry cliffs
Fingers taught upon the ropes
I'd scrawl a prayer on the chart
if there was time
but I have only the dolphins to trust
and a leap of faith
fashioning my destiny
from this moment
