Misspent Youth

Misspent Youth

Cloistered in dormitory solitude
Laughter sings from hallway
Like an impenetrable wall
Transparent as clear glass
Through which I glimpse youth
As mine slips away into an abyss of silence

Pale walls encompass my world
Fluorescent lamp illuminates worlds of beyond
Ancient minds shine with super nova brilliance
Stories transmitted through browned parchment
Carried like Dandelion on the Aeolian wind
Sprout in distant lands across centuries

Socrates’ warmth melts the ice of my loneliness
Coaxes me with gentle love
Dissipates the shadows of illusion
Reveals the golden path to eternity

Surrendering to lullabies of Gregorian chant
I sink into torpid stillness
My mind recedes into darkness
Like the tide ebbing
In restless currents of desire
