Comment on our Society
I strayed off my path for the pretty flowers
But they consumed me for hours and hours
This consumerism demon devours your soul and with each one grows exponentially in powers
And those that are empowered become a rare breed
When the crowd are showered in ideology that promotes cruelty and greed
The media smokescreen makes it hard for us to see, filling our eyes and lungs til we choke and gasp for air to breathe
Cutting off oxygen and logic like the soaps we find hypnotic
The divide and conquer tactics are their planned and planted seeds
Fear is used to breed a race of frightened racist sheep whose soft brains and fat bellies are force fed to believe
And brainwashed to accept
You're just an individual, with no power to protest
No responsibility
Eyes buried in the sand, we're pretending to be free
Accepted public apathy
But in reality is guilt absolved by pretending you can't see?
Pretend that it’s okay, just look the other way
Didn't Milgram teach you anything?
We're programmed to obey
This is what's rammed into our brains
You need bigger toys and better grades
And all your clothes should be brand names
Consume, obey, obey, consume
You need products, make up and perfume to lure yourself a handsome groom
Walk down the aisle and multiply and don't forget to buy buy buy
All gently now in single file
Stay on the path and never stray, conveyor belt straight to your grave
Eat your meat and go to church
Drink your milk and medicate
Take more tablets if it hurts
Do what the TV says, obey, behave!
Deep down though it causes us alarm
Children starve while our leftovers rot on the table
It's not right not to think it's disgraceful
Animals savagely harmed and cruelly farmed while we sit and watch documentaries about it on cable
We must be able to grasp it, it's there just under the surface
Surely to end the suffering of countless lives must be worth it
Can't we see the Earth will be uninhabitable once we've pillaged it and burnt it
Money won't save the human race, we'll perish, and deserve it
But don't just observe it take a stand
You give the government your opinion with every penny that passes your hands
Is your message contingent in nature or do your values hold true?
Only you will know if your conscience is clear from the actions you choose
In these times, ignorance is no longer an excuse
You know the shit that Nestle do
Unilever, P&G create a false economy
You know the animal testing, rainforest destroying, slave labour employing truth
And every time you buy their products, you're contributing too
I'm not trying to make anyone feel ashamed, cos really who am I to apportion the blame
Until a year ago I would have thought this strange and denied the truth, fully loyal to my subconscious pretence
This isn't a religion I'm not asking you to repent
I just think it’s something everyone should comprehend
Looking back I'm just thankful I've opened my eyes and I've shifted that uncomfortable feeling inside
That cognitive dissonance I was trying to deny has been replaced with resonance when doing something right
Anyway I'm just saying I think each of us can make a difference
United we could make an unbreakable resistance
But hey, it’s only a poem, but maybe it'll make a few of you consider your actions and change
It's been worth it, even if it's just in one instance
