A Week That Was
Saturday
1.
I'm loath to comb the
morning tangles
from my long dark hair
2.
watching birds scatter
the shadows of
hot air balloons
3.
showering—
connect constellations of
freckles on his shoulders
4.
writing this haiku
before bedtime
the fridge faintly humming
Sunday
1.
early morning walk—
incontinent ladies
and church dogs
2.
fixing breakfast
cracks the curve of an egg
with the curve of my hand
3.
at the zoo
we sneak a grope
by the python cage
at the zoo
the alpha baboon curls his
lip up at me
at the petting zoo
the goats shit pellets
constantly
4.
new rain arriving—
a moment of night's passion paused
while we listen
Monday
1.
waking from dreams
of chasing cats up a tree—
am I the dog?
tree-trimmers over
at the park, down goes the tree
from my dreams!
2.
toast waiting
for the homemade jelly
we just ran out of
3.
pomegranate halves, red
on half-read newspaper—
jelly-making day
pomegranates—
skin of their ruby seeds
holding autumn in
4.
dreaming of jars
of another year's jelly
now in the pantry
Tuesday
1.
hearing trees yawn
in the wind
I open my mouth
2.
morning tithe—
I spoon out a honeydew
its green perfume
3.
open-air market
ripe persimmons, and the
warm scent of last night
4.
today was his 'flu shot,
tonight we share a bath—
the pain a mem'ry
Wednesday
1.
peering from its edge
he sips a cup of tea
as I cut pears in two
2.
phone sex—
car windows down
leaves and voices drift in
3.
sudden cloudburst—
our reflection in the windshield
becomes a deluge
4.
haiku
punctuated by the replay
of gunfire on the news
5.
tonight our clothes
drip-drying in the tub
distant thunder lulls us
Thursday
1.
freeze-dried berries
in a bowl of cornflakes, still
my delight for the seeds
2.
late morning
smoothing down the bed sheet—
outlines of my tortoiseshell comb
3.
texting each other our haiku—
tires hiss on
rain-soaked streets
4.
home from work—
finding me on the bed
in a pile of warm laundry
5.
clay pots—
nudes awaiting the brush
soft laughter from the bedroom
Friday
1.
from a window
voyeur during his shower—
dawn's autumn pallet
2.
lace curtain patterns
from a kitchen breeze
filling the fruit bowl
3.
curbside run-off
of a graceful silhouette
the flight of a crane
4.
chopping winter vegetables
for stew—
my thoughts of summer plums
5.
*my air to his fire—
a position for ev'ry phase
of the moon
*Friday #5: our astrological elements
Haiku/Senryu (Eastern poetry) each day of a week.
