Cognitive Balance
"Calmer Seas Ahead"
Reads the sign on the therapist's wall
Her latest behavioral plan simplified
Contained neatly within this forecast
Her point is to circumvent
Waylay these punitive thoughts
Confront the power of negative thinking
And supply some positive outcome
For example:
"I'm facing my end of days," he whines
A personal armageddon
The loss of everything creative and true
Jackals howling nightly at the door"
So wise up with some soothing slogan
Perhaps "This Too Shall Pass"
Confidence in ultimate victory
Some balance may one day be achieved
Relatively pain-free nights and sanity
All the comforts of home
But there remains some malaise
The persistent din of a reality show
Smoke pouring from family nostrils
A blood pattern on the bathroom wall
Whispers of betrayal, tears on her pillow
And the abyss just stares right back
Only a new motto blocking its perspective:
"Don't Give It A Thought."

I would hate to think that psychiatrists' have "sold out" on the human soul?. . .An excellent reflection, Sir Crow. . .xo, Devlin.

Good question Devlin. Hopefully they leave room for the poor soul. The spiritual component should be included in case histories. Thanks for the read and thought!

No, that's not me, just an innocent bystander I coerced into a straight jacket. "You are not your thoughts, but the observer of your thoughts." That's the kind of detachment I wish I had. Thank you for that fine and detailed comment, Jennifer, better therapy than I could get from a psychiatric pro.

I think we could all do much better without the usual "This too shall pass" and "calmer seas ahead" cliches that the docs throw at us. Great observation, right down to the details. Gave me a walk-through of the shrink's office.

I'm also tired of all-purpose platitudes and clichés. I still wish I could Zen out on them and give into the prospect of a rosy future with some level of optimism. It doesn't really work, never did. My angst is just too stubborn. Some have better luck and I wish them Godspeed with all the time in the world. Thanks for the comment Aarti!

A wonderful commentary on PMA thinking and therapy. I try to fill my head with such gems in the hopes it will edge out the doo doo. Bravo Crow!

Thanks Gahdess! Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is more effective than most. It's intended to head off irrational fears with a more realistic perspective. It's based on evidence. What are the facts supporting the fear or delusion, and do they indicate that the sky will fall? Usually not. It's consider successful if a CBT patient can actually incorporate this kind of thinking to his or her own situation on a day-to-day basis and find some peace of mind. It takes practice and patience. I've still got a long way to go.

"A personal armageddon".. thinking this one prolly gets very costly extra sessions. 'oh & my'..
"Smoke pouring from family nostrils <~~*fave power line!
A blood pattern on the bathroom wall"
~sharp images here.. one can try hard and harder, but still have the few deeper unresolvables it seems..
excellent examples.. and we must wonder if they leave a few to 'stew fer next round purposely..
"So wise up with some soothing slogan
Perhaps "This Too Shall Pass""
~ever grinning me .. this *must be played to smooth classical musics o'course ;) likes.
Powerful awareness in honest observes.. priceless dear Crow!
shineez to your night,

That's a good point. I sometimes wonder if some shrinks and other medical pros solve some issues but leave others so the patient will have to keep coming back for further treatment. "This Too Shall Pass." I'm more inclined to believe that "This Too Shall Blow Up In My Face" but I'm trying to work out a compromise. Thanks T!

It seems to suggest "Get Over It" would be an equal slogan. Quieting of the voices is just that, a quieting. But it does not change the content of the voices. This is an interesting poem that has philosophical invocation. Nice work Crow! I like your choice of subject matter.

Well said. The volume of the voices may be adjusted but the content can still be troubling. I guess it's how we listen and receive, and our own conclusions. "Get Over It" is fine too. These mottos, slogans or mantras work some but have to be repeated ad nauseam until they sink in if they ever do at all. Thanks DPW! Peace be with you.

I agree, Taryn. The pros are in it more for the money than any other reason.. It's the friends who really care that count and are the most helpful..

A brilliant write crow even if I can not relate never have spent any time or money on a therapist. The last stanza is what I lived my life by for along time (Don't Give It A Thought)and it catches up with you sooner or later.
