Image for the poem long gone lovers

long gone lovers

whiskey in the bottle, bottle on the shelf
set a simple table, visiting myself

red silk tie, navy jacket, classy gray fedora
take a midnight stroll thru Sodom & Gomorrah

lightning brands the starless sky & thunder roars
dancehalls full of blues & dire, mascara’d whores

the siren sighs of fallen angels on the make
gold will tarnish easy, & hearts were meant to break

I’m dancing slow with a doll who’s sepia-haired & lonely
shuffle & swaying, just to hold her close to me

love burns like autumn leaves & dreams must turn to stone
my name is John, & I was born to be alone

a hundred moons have risen in the distant skies
& still I see her face & hear her plaintive cries

ghostly hands embrace me, restless in the covers
the mournful eyes & dreaded kiss of long gone lovers…
