Fire to Fire

too long
have I stayed away

I’ve approached you
with cautious announcements
delivered music as enticement
made gestures of dancing
that merely disguised my desire
to embrace you

how bold, how bold is a man
who hesitates?
if I were in the wilderness
& needed to eat
I would hunt the rabbit, the deer
kill it, strip away the skin
& eat the flesh

there is a terrible rage within me
I have named it fire
& so also within you
your fire reflecting my own

fire to fire

the rapture of our joining
would thus manifest a flaming tower
that would rise beyond the unfolding sky
thunderstorm embattled
to encinder the nearest stars
& heaven would know
what passion is

but distance, & darkness, curse me
my lips too cold
my hands too far, to reach you

this poem ~ this untamed poem
I make as a testament
you will find it & know
that my heart is a vessel
designed to hold your heart

if your fire reflects my own
if the sentient chain of verse is our bond
then make me a poem
I will keep it ~ for now ~ for every tomorrow

fire to fire
