The Calm Before
This is entered in "The Doors" competition
Smoke drifts past her window
A reassurance that her sons and lovers will return
Their ritual ancient and true
Cars move in the distance
Their headlights trailing through the hills
Drivers dying behind the wheel
While bystanders lose their innocence
Clouds gather in the distance
And the riders are coming in to bind spells.
When the rain threatens to pour
Joining this city's tears
But never doubting that secret smile
The fire blooming in your eyes
Our sheets pulled back
In what we call asylum
The sanity shared in our embrace
When we come home.
