Luck of the Draw
Gunslingers seldom like to wait
And that high noon train is running late
Their trigger fingers start to itch
While Ike Clanton comments "Death's a bitch"
But that engine pulls in belching steam
Brakes engage with a rusty scream
Then Wyatt Earp steps from a car
Pinning on the lawman's star
Earp says "Dudes, let have some fun"
But Clanton's clumsy with his gun
Dismayed to find his barrel stuck
Inspired to mutter "What the fuck?"
Earp says "Boys, give it a rest
We'll put our talents to the test
But let's go grab a shot of gin
Then we'll let the best man win."

A new story, and those characters in your poems... A good read again, crowfly.

Thanks, silva. I've always been fascinated by the Wyatt Earp saga, and I love westerns, particularly spaghetti westerns. A minute to pray, a second to die.

Thanks, S.O. I try not to get locked into rhyme schemes too much. It gets to be a gimmick sometimes. But it's kind of fun for me, like working a puzzle. I really admire poets who don't lean on the formalities, rhyme, rhythm, whatever, and make their point freely with well chosen words that flow without the artifice. That's the neatest trick.

Crow this evokes in me memories of reading over and over again the account of OK Corral in my Time/Life Western series, Gunfighters edition...with the dead laid out on display. Thank you!

You're welcome. I think more in terms of movies, but it's interesting that Wyatt Earp lived to a ripe old age and became a technical advisor on Hollywood westerns. Probably gave a few pointers on how to keep a cool head in a gunfight. Neat trick if you can do it.

Thanks, amigo. I just think about Wyatt, his brothers and Doc Holliday and I always get a thrill. The Clantons never really had a chance, except as back shooters. I believe justice was finally served.

"My Darling Clementine" is possibly the best film about Earp, Holliday and the OK Corral. Henry Fonda stars as Earp. Or catch Fonda in "Once Upon the Time In the West" to see his dark side. That actor had some range.

Keeping it hood. That's good crowfly. That's what I was referring to a few weeks back with "Wild West Solutions. Compile the best provings."
This one really resonates with me. Thanks for writing it, crowfly.
