love is a gypsy
she showed up at midnight. came in the back door.
something about her face, almost familiar, I told her. out of
focus snapshot of someone I knew long ago. ‘maybe I’m the
poem you wrote when you put away your toy soldiers,’ she said.
‘& peeked out your window at the girl next door.’ but she was
wrong; her face was pretty enough, but there was no poetry there.
it was too quiet, she didn’t like it. but two years in stir makes a
man tight, hard to de-stress in the company of a woman. she
suggested a little music, slow dancing. sure, I like to dance.
she tuned in a radio station that knew about heartbreak, & spun the
vinyl to prove it. who was more broken hearted than Julie London,
when she beat us sweet & tender with ‘cry me a river’…
she came in close as we danced. my hands moved over her back,
reminding me that God created woman out of necessity. my anxiety
fell away, a little chip at a time.
she removed her simple dress without haste, watching me watch.
then she began unbuttoning my shirt, & I let her do it. there were
things I needed to re-learn, & she had the credentials for the job.
when I tried to kiss her, she turned away; maybe it wasn’t on the
curriculum. so I held her head & took possession of her mouth,
as if I had the right.
in moments we were on our knees, my arms a circle around her,
demanding the solar flares of her marketed flesh, while I lowered
her to the floor. she opened her legs & guided me to the temple
of her sacrifice. of my deliverance.
the darkness & the music cocooned us, we rode a shooting star to
that nameless place that’s far away & close, we held each other
hard, harder than heaven, & I gave her something, something of
myself, & she accepted it…
radio waves slink to infinity, night becomes day,
a working girl’s got an agenda to keep.
& a man can notch off the minutes,
remembering long ago lovers…

Powerful, mesmerising. It takes skill to present a scene to read as if it has never been written before.

I love the title!,,, are you sure you are not a movie star from the days that has became faded? And sent here to haunt us with your poetic heartbeat. You evoke emotions of the yearning sort,, and I do yearn. Thank you for your timeless ink. For as long as I live I'll be linking those that are noir hungry to your poetry. I'd like to have seen his black n white, perhaps suited and faceless photo for this one!

Fabulous. the language you use more of a story than a poem. Its really a breath of fresh air to read that style

"when I tried to kiss her, she turned away; maybe it wasn’t on the

Beautiful and Passionate Ink John!!!

Nice job as always, John, in the here and "noir". My favorite line is "we rode a shooting star to that nameless place that’s far away & close,"

Stunning lines, John, a mix of raw reality and the innocents of a need fulfilled...
