Listening to Silent Songs
When silence can be found
Your soul is free to sound
Then listen you will hear
From spirits not so near
They saw the natural day
Before man walked this way
They sung uplifting songs
Of joys, Of hopes, Long gone
When noise slips in your mind
A quite space do find
To listen to your soul
And clearly hear whats known
They saw the natural day

Time is a precious thing
Used wisely it will bring
A simple life to be
For setting your soul free

Hi Devlin. Happy you visited. Silence can have a sound of it's own. Thanks for the complement. I'd like to work on this one some more, get it smoother, and also have some development in the refrain.

Hi Kate. I' glad you liked it. I've been working on this one for a little while, had the outline and different verses, different versions. So I simplified it today so I could move it out of editing, and put it out there for comment. I'd like to work on it some more, try to add more meaning, and development. It's a start...
I struggle with the concept of emotions, why do they exist, did they come from evolution, where does joy fit in? This poem tries to bring out a previous, ancient, time that was more joyous and hopeful. And in silence, your soul can hear those sounds, but we need to listen also.
In the last verse, I'm trying to say to simplify your life and remove the noise and listen to the soul. Didn't quite get it all in there...

Silence indeed can bring joy and hope and most of all inspiration to one's soul. I like the way you use repetitions in this poem...the past, the present and even the future, they represent. You nailed it jvp!

Thanks for stopping, Eng. Silence can be special, and there is a lot of writing about silence here. Interesting question, is silence the absence of sound, or, is sound the absence of silence? I'm in a class on poetry that focuses on meter, so I'm trying to write with more rhythm. I'm also trying to incorporate a refrain in, but prefer to have a story line develop in the refrain also, unlike here where the three refrains are the same.

Good question jvp...just like magnets, two opposing forces attract either way it goes, the question leaves a deep meaning and speaks the truth.
Good for you for attending poetry class...just did it on my own by frequenting poetry sites and reading Treasury of American Poetry: Best Loved Poems by American Poets. Maybe one of these days we should plan a poetry reading event with Souldareatease who is from West Virginia, also a nature lover just like me.
