Someone at the Door

holding greens wilting
on her hands,
eyes shining with hope
lurking within despair
three feet tall
looking up

veges for a dollar
just a dollar, sir
its straight from my mama's
bag, she brought this morning
from the farmer's fair
please buy it sir

uncaring eyes of the tall
thin man, made her shiver
but she had to have the dollar
to buy the painkiller
to make mama better
her lips started to quiver

he took the wilting vegetables
and dump them in the bin
she looked on tears falling
down her cheeks
he shut the door
leaving her outside crying

he came out with his white coat on
and a heavy black bag
drag her into his sleek car
and brought her home
he took care of her groaning mama
suffering with stomach ulcer

he gave her a home
he gave her mama a garden
and all the greens to tend
his eyes started to thaw
mama's smiles began to glow
and she started to grow

one fateful morning
she knew
she had gained a new Papa
who would love mama
and her.
