she conjures, like destiny

you can’t stop running.
if you do, you’ll go up in flames.

& you can’t stop drinking.
it’s the whiskey’s fire that will one day burn
her memory out of your skull, & her ashes
will drift on a carrion wind. when it happens,
you’ll be free, you can stop.
but you never get close to that final drink…

I remember that dangerous night,
moonlight leaking through lacy curtains, like madness.
a night when the moon put stars in her eyes,
& I fell into her deeply, all of her mystery.
she was annihilation; she was God’s sultry
weapon for the punishment of men.

I bit her lip when I kissed her, to taste her blood.
I gripped her ivory throat, to show her I could
strangle the life out of her with the force of my hand.
& she smiled, hoping that I would;
& she laughed, knowing that I could not.

maybe it was the desire to solicit a twisted, surreal
heaven,  a castle in the air that love builds…

but there ain’t no heaven for sinners like us.
