POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I find it ironic that I consider myself to be a writer, yet I can't find the right words to introduce myself.
Faceless
I used to fall asleep at night
Where your face appeared
You danced under my eyelids
You whispered in my ears
"Come with me," you whispered
You reached out your hand
You pulled away before I could grab it
On my own I could not stand
"Help me," I called out
To your figure in the dark
I could see the trace of your shadow
Your eyes in the hint of a spark
"Come on, come on"
I felt you starting to move
I try so hard to follow
I have something to prove
But you made a deal with the devil that night
Leaving me far...
Where your face appeared
You danced under my eyelids
You whispered in my ears
"Come with me," you whispered
You reached out your hand
You pulled away before I could grab it
On my own I could not stand
"Help me," I called out
To your figure in the dark
I could see the trace of your shadow
Your eyes in the hint of a spark
"Come on, come on"
I felt you starting to move
I try so hard to follow
I have something to prove
But you made a deal with the devil that night
Leaving me far...

Locked Out in the Cold
On a bitter winter's night
A man shuffled through town
With not a soul on the road
Only snow on the ground
He walked by a place
He once knew so well
If the walls could speak
They'd have stories to tell
He walks up to the door
Shyly steals a look in
He's twenty-three again
Ordering himself a tonic and gin
He needs the liquid courage
To talk to that girl
A man knows by looking
When he sees the start of his world
They danced away the night
As his friends watched
From the comfort of the bar...

Among the Willows
I been on the run most of my life
Started with petty crimes
Now I run armed with a knife
Been on the run from the drunk
Who raised me with a belt
Running from Johnny Law
Been on the run from myself
I hide away during the day
I steal during the night
My one and only friend
Has been the half moonlight
Well, there was this one night
Things were going as planned
I broke into the house
Of the county's richest man
Spending all his ill-earned money
On women, cards and booze...

Dancing in the Trees
Laying in the grass
Looking at the sky
You turn to me and say:
"Go run and hide!"
I jump quickly to my feet
I begin to run
"One, two, three...
Ready or not, here I come"!
Your voice fades with the setting sun
Sprinting through the fields
My feet barely touching the ground
I dive into a patch of grass
Patiently waiting to be found
Your voice is getting nearer
"Emily..."
I try not to make a sound
I burst into laughter
Knowing I've been found
"I've got you!"
And for a moment, ...

Davey-boy
I kneel before the headstone; it is plain, no intricate design, no ornate details, just as I expected. It reads:
David J. Silverman
Father, husband, veteran
1909-1983
There is a vase of wilted flowers that I'm sure Aunt Jane brought, knowing damn well if you were alive, you would tell her to take them back.
"You were a brute, old bastard," I sigh heavily, "you hated everyone and everything. All I ever wanted to hear, my whole life was, 'good job, David. I'm proud of you.' But you could never say those words. Why was it so hard for you?" I glance around momentarily,...

Chained
At last you open your eyes
And much to my delight
My grinning face is the very first thing
Within your limited sight
"Where am I?" Is the first thing you said
A tremor in your voice
I sigh, I shake my head
"I'm sorry, you'd left me without choice
But there's no need to fret
I'm here to ensure you won't
Do something we would both regret"
"Please don't hurt me," your voice mere
"So that's why you believe
I've brought you here?
To inflict upon pain?
After all of this, I finally see
It was truly you...

Dreaming
I'm surrounded by wildflowers
And a sky that's blue
I look into the distance
And am glad to see you're here too
Because this is a safe place
It had been so long
I'd forgotten the sunny look of your face
I pick myself up
Towards you I begin to run
A dark cloud rolls in
And consumes the shining sun
As the sky begins to turn
The life surrounding us
Is beginning to burn
The sky opens up
A downpour ensues
But it cannot help the trees
Scorched at the roots
I scratch, claw, and crawl ...

Poison Ivy
They all lived quietly
In their house that stood tall
Never did they imagine
One day it might inevitably fall
When the paint began to fragment
Over it with another coat
They went
When the old wooden floors began to split
They covered the shards
With a decorative carpet
When family pictures began to fall
They nailed deeper
Into the cracking wall
Now as they slept soundly
Without a care
Because they believed their four walls
Would always be there
But soon they were awakened by a...

Wisps of a Wish
Sitting solely in a field
Surrounded by grass and weeds
You quietly sat down
In the middle of the seeds
You didn't say a word
In silence there you sat
I wish I could have filled the silence
To keep the sky from turning black
I searched your eyes for something
My eyes you could not meet
You just sat there curled up
Brimming in your own defeat
With tears ready to spill over
A small smile crossed your face
"I've got an idea"
I sat, longing for your embrace
Instead you...

Chasing Midnight
In the quiet of the night
I awaken with a start
There's a pounding on the door
I feel the banging in my heart
I step outside
There is a small child in a red hood
I try to speak
She silently takes off for the woods
I can barely keep up
I only see flashes of red
No matter how fast I run
She stays a few steps ahead
I am stumbling
I am out of breath
She just keeps running
As if she knows this path
I just keep on running
My bare feet pound the earth
I am...

Paint
Weary, uncertain
I just cannot seem to pick up the paintbrush anymore
I no longer feel like an artist
Instead, I am a fraud
A fraud that holds a paintbrush
In my trembling, calloused hands
An artist can pick up a canvas
Create something out of nothing
Something beautiful
At any given time
I haven’t been able to do so in weeks, a month, a year
I’ve lost track of the time
But today is the day
I am unsure of what it is I will paint

Good-bye
Is that truly what you want?” she whispered wistfully. The raindrops running down her rosy cheeks and the playful shadows cast upon her delicate face made it nearly impossible to know for certain what it was she was feeling. For a moment, just one fleeting moment, I forgot why we were here, standing in the frigid, forlorn rain saying goodbye.
I looked at the way her long, wet hair clung desperately to her forehead; I looked at the way her eyebrows furrowed in contemporary confusion; I looked at the way her eyes appeared wide and innocent knowing they were anything but; I looked at the...
