POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I have been writing poems since I was 13 years old. I have had many publications of individual poems in newspapers, magazines, electronic forums, and on radio.
October Poems 2024 >> unfettered
A Poem for Each Day of the Month in Which I was Born
October 01
unfettered
october morn, the dawning of the age,
flush falling leaves and chilly weather spar
for pride of place with sentinel and sage.
oktoberfested images bizarre
of hallowentine masks and secret charms,
pieces of eight, yet tentative, yet blind,
yet hesitant to trigger false alarms.
fair evidence of spring not hard to find,
where white light, kissing hard the southern sphere,
slants more autumnal where the north winds blow, ...

Notes and chords have become my second language and,
more often than not, that vocabulary expresses what I feel
when language fails me.”—Larry Burkett
his strings have more to say
than his pursed lips ever did
i sit and watch him play,
for the talent that he hid:
superiorer in silence than in sound.
his fingers are his tongue,
and his strings the orator,
whose words are fiercely strung
like a guileless praedator, ...

The one principle that surrounds everything else is that of
stewardship; that we are the managers of everything that
God has given us.—”Larry Burkett
it must be for the greater good
that some above the crowds have stood,
while others on the edge of life repine;
the stewardship of every man
must be to serve a nobler plan
than pick his teeth and phartz above cloud nine.
the lawyer in sartorial guise
must not the ass...

The skeletons of the past must not hold back the dream of a new life, even
though fear and regret, guilt and remorse may unsettle us during the effort to
give our future a new home.”—Erik Pevernagie

PenChant
a connoisseur am i of sculpted words
that heal as balm and slay as sharp, swift swords;
a penchant summon i per excellence,
that withers not in front of pestilence.
a chant have i for every kind of pain,
to cut my loss and multiply my gain;
i write the hell out of my tragedies,
(my pen conscripts plights into parodies!).
a chant have i for every kind of joy,
elation, vim, panache to re-employ
as cool oases in the desert place,
along vexed corridors of time and space.

compromise
The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion
and the will to help others.”—Albert Schweitzer
it is unwise
to compromise
the truth,
whether the time
be of your prime
or youth.
the ways of man,
whether by plan
or chance,
mark well from birth,
upon the earth,
his dance.
it is unkind
to wear a blind
passport
to shield the eye
from those who cry:
in short,
turn not aside
those who must ride
the storm;
reach out and bless
those who know less ...
and the will to help others.”—Albert Schweitzer

torn between two choices
Your choices are made in a moment, and yet their
consequences transcend a lifetime.”—M. J. DeMarco
choice leads me on:
sorely am i divided.
a hopeless pawn?
a future predecided?
no parliament
convened, tho scant a hearing?
chance to repent,
ere naked flames come searing?
the evil eye
blindfolds the will of reason,

i shall abide

“Honour belongs to those who never forsake the truth even when things
seem dark and grim, who try over and over again, who are never discouraged
by insults, humiliation and even defeat.”—Nelson Mandela
under the clock,
over harsh circumstances;
spawned on the Rock,
interred by hard-knock dances;
i stand alone,
sifted by choice and chances;
by coarse winds blown,
whose lips know no romances.
here sprouts my path;
there wanes my mother’s...

“When you acquire enough inner peace and feel really positive about yourself, it's almost
impossible for you to be controlled and manipulated by anybody else.”—Wayne Dyer
in the throes of circumstances,
i’ve been overlooked,
as the pow’rs of choice and chances
pass me, overbooked.
often am i undervalued
by their cheating scales,
measured by hate’s spiteful prelude,

when it rains
mixed feelings
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning
to dance in the rain.”—Vivian Greene
when it rains, i have mixed feelings
of the deluge i must face,
for some showers leave me reeling,
and some raindrops ruin my base.
when it rains a rainbow harvest,
all my life soars on a cloud;
but the rains that hit me hardest
are the ones that hope enshroud.
when it rains harsh disillusion,
stirring dregs long put to sleep,
earth and heav’n weigh my confusion ...

i shall arise
Sometimes the worst thing that happens to you, the thing you think you
can’t survive… it’s the thing that makes you better than you used to
be.”—Jennifer Weiner, Fly Away Home
so many, many stars:
eyes of the skies that search the twilight night!
they know not scars or wars,
although the space between them seems so tight.
o splashing, dashing sea:
how many drops of water does it take
to set full free your glee,
when thrusting river, stream, and brook, and lake
