“The one principle that surrounds everything else is that of
stewardship; that we are the managers of everything that
God has given us.—”Larry Burkett
it must be for the greater good
that some above the crowds have stood,
while others on the edge of life repine;
the stewardship of every man
must be to serve a nobler plan
than pick his teeth and phartz above cloud nine.
the lawyer in sartorial guise
must not the ass of compromise
bestow with ardent kisses of grandeur;
the doctor with his instrument
must not be so self-confident
in siphoning off breadcrumbs from the poor.
the preacher’s holier-than-thou pose
must look not down its scornful nose
at guileless sinners who, in penitence,
come to the Cross with widow’s mite
that they may peace find in the Light,
who, for life’s bitterness, seek recompense.
the judge upon his dreadful throne,
whose vext injustice grief has known,
must one day bow before a greater pow’r:
God rules in the affairs of men,
who think they own the oxygen
that makes their dust a dot in time’s rush hour.
