POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm just a human living my life, and this is where I spill the stuff I can't say out loud. Sometimes the words arrange themselves nicely, and that's pretty cool.
Roar
I'm that
freakish empathic
peace-loving hippie
willing to see the hurt
beneath the behaviour
eager to forgive
to seal your wounds
with undeserved love
because I believe
there is grace for all
But
approach my kid
with your candied lies
I'll go punk on your ass
I don't care about
your sad backstory
Grow up and
keep it in your pants
you fucking
pervert
Good thing there's
grace for all
I might need it

NEOWISE
Last time you made a visit
was our dawn
Just learning
to scatter seeds into soil
to gather into settlements
to scratch our thoughts into stone...
To be "civilized"
Look at us now as you pass by again --
Billions of tiny
insignificant lives
still scrabbling in the dirt
gathering in our tribes
wrting thoughts with our thumbs now
but none of them new....
Have we developed
in any of the ways that count?
Come check on us again
in another 6,000 years
Maybe then we'll have it
figured out
was our dawn

It's simple
If you want to turn me on
You don't need to flex
or show off your big brain
No need to win arguments
with clever 'gotcha' questions
No sir, the way to my heart
is to show me your humility
and I'm not talking submission
or masochistic meekness
I'm talking respect
and genuine warmth
for someone who means
nothing
to you.
It's easy to be kind to your friends
but how you treat
a stranger
tells me all I need to know
about you.

Fireflies
dark-defying bugs
glitter-dusting forest's edge
are they earth-bound stars?

"Mini Me"
A term of endearment,
pride in the one who carries
my face, my hair, my sarcasm...
I will never insult you
with this term again
For you have been a force
since the day you first
kicked my ribs
active and fierce
owning your mind and our hearts
laying down laws
You are storm and vinegar
bluntness and bubbles
sparkles and daggers
kindness and secrets
a mystery of poise and grace...
Even from your smallest moments,
you have never been 'mini',
and my beautiful sunshine,
you are so, ...
pride in the one who carries
my face, my hair, my sarcasm...
I will never insult you
with this term again
For you have been a force
since the day you first
kicked my ribs
active and fierce
owning your mind and our hearts
laying down laws

Even from your smallest moments,

and my beautiful sunshine,

Forest walk
Boss gave us a day off –
“take time to reflect and relax”
Smart, he knew we all needed it
So here I am, taking my writing book to my favourite trail
Bench #1 - Letting go
Deep breaths, the prescription for relaxation
just inhaling the scent
balsam, cedar, spruce, pine
I took off my sunglasses
so I can take it all in
unfiltered
*
So, we’re on to a new phase, re-opening --
Just when I finally got used to
the low-grade anxiety
the wiping of all the things
the distancing and isolation -- ...

7 year old me wrote a poem
I love the smell of lilax
It is my favorite smell
But if there was no lilax
There would not be any smell
It is my favorite smell
But if there was no lilax
There would not be any smell

Weeds
The trick is knowing
what to pull out
and what to leave.
It's hard to tell at first,
when things are just sprouting.
It all looks green and promising
until the leaves start to take
their mature form.
After years of gardening,
I'm pretty good at telling the difference.
I can discern
which humble beginnings
will bear the fruit I intended
and which will choke the life
out of everything good.
It took some mistakes to get here,
but in the garden it's pretty easy.
In real life it's much harder, ...
what to pull out
and what to leave.
It's hard to tell at first,
when things are just sprouting.
It all looks green and promising
until the leaves start to take
their mature form.

Come, step into my bubble
I want you to invade
my zone of protection
I’ll never have immunity
to your infection
I beg you to speak
moistly to me
droplets of soul mingling
naked and free
enter my bloodstream
dismantle defences
let words lay waste
to each other’s pretences
suffer the danger
as fevers rise
that lost embrace
found deep in your eyes

Garden day
It wasn't in my plan for the day
I wasn't even dressed for it
I just went out to look
and before I knew it
I had planted a whole garden
in a half-day of sweat
and satisfaction
never been one
for rules and procedures
I have little patience
for the "best way"
so good gardeners would gasp
at the blatant disregard
for their cherished wisdom
that leads to superior yields
just casually throw
last year's leftover seeds
into the dirt
and wait
and proceed to neglect
most of...

No, Spotify...
You may not "shuffle play"
the songs of Abbey Road.
The album cannot start
with The End
nor can you have Polythene Pam
stomping
on the tail of Because.
And furthermore,
after being ravaged by the
intense
bliss
of She's So Heavy,
one needs the light
of Here Comes the Sun.
Consider it aftercare.
Some things just can't be shuffled.

Morning Glory
too early
lazy gray sky
heavy
the grinding
the pressing
the dripping
anticipation
heady aroma
hot milky bliss
warm throat
open eyes
ray of sun
ready
