Image for the poem Garden day

Garden day

It wasn't in my plan for the day
I wasn't even dressed for it
I just went out to look
and before I knew it
I had planted a whole garden
in a half-day of sweat
and satisfaction

never been one
for rules and procedures
I have little patience
for the "best way"
so good gardeners would gasp
at the blatant disregard
for their cherished wisdom
that leads to superior yields

just casually throw
last year's leftover seeds
into the dirt

and wait

and proceed to neglect
most of the watering and weeding

and miraculously

I still get more food
than if I hadn't planted at all.

it's reassuring to know
that my lack of diligence
cannot halt the steady progress
of nature
