POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I compare poetry to painting, believing that I lack any drawing/painting skills but believing my imagination and training in writing has enabled me to transfer my love of visual art to the written word
The Garden, An Oasis
noon
a summer day
stifling heat
smog rests over the city
a dirty cloud
a garden sits to the side of a busy street
shaded by trees
empty and still
a solitary person enters
and chooses a bench by the rockery
they close their eyes and rest
savouring the shade and the temporary cool
a summer day
stifling heat
smog rests over the city
a dirty cloud
a garden sits to the side of a busy street
shaded by trees
empty and still
a solitary person enters
and chooses a bench by the rockery
they close their eyes and rest
savouring the shade and the temporary cool

The Stranger On The Train
fast moving carriage
empty mini-bar
the stranger doesn’t see or hear
just sits in a reverie
not daring to think
the mind wanders
the train tilts
comes to an abrupt halt
but the stranger barely notices
just glances at the empty cup
and sighs
empty mini-bar
the stranger doesn’t see or hear
just sits in a reverie
not daring to think
the mind wanders
the train tilts
comes to an abrupt halt
but the stranger barely notices
just glances at the empty cup
and sighs

Rain In May
May Bank Holiday
Warm but not sunny
Half-deserted streets
The sky a tone of industrial grey
An oppresive heaviness hangs in the air
A hint of thunder, perhaps?
The rain has started
A steady patter
Clear and tepid
A downpour now
The rain stops
A welcome chill
The mugginess has vanished
Warm but not sunny
Half-deserted streets
The sky a tone of industrial grey
An oppresive heaviness hangs in the air
A hint of thunder, perhaps?
The rain has started

Clear and tepid

The Scent And Sound Of The Sea
Sand, water, salt and sky
Blue oceanic laughter
The ice cream van
Bleating seagulls
Clusters of rocks
The solitary garden at the foot of the cliff

Thunder In The Summer
An empty trail in the middle of country,
Weaving through hills and trees.
The air is muggy and sticky.
The sky darkens.
Clouds clump together,
Dark and brooding.
The first drops of rain come,
Warm still from the heat.
A trickle, then a torrent.
Splattering.
The rain soaks the solitary walker,
Seeping deep into his socks and his boots.
The walker takes refuge under a cluster of trees,
Waiting,
Wishing now that he hadn’t...
Weaving through hills and trees.
The air is muggy and sticky.
The sky darkens.
Clouds clump together,
Dark and brooding.
The first drops of rain come,
Warm still from the heat.
A trickle, then a torrent.
Splattering.
The rain soaks the solitary walker,
Seeping deep into his socks and his boots.
The walker takes refuge under a cluster of trees,
Waiting,
Wishing now that he hadn’t...

Distant Bells
The church bells ring
Chimes from afar
Fanfares, near whispers
A choir of angels
Sounds that carry over the river
Through the fields
As the sun sets
Painting the sky magenta

Mud In The Forest
Tiny leaves settle on the ground
Rustic-brown and covered in mud
The wind is silent
The rain has stopped
Nearby footsteps crunch
As walkers wade through mud
In search of the wooden shelter
Warmth

Unwinding
Solace
Night
Stillness
Time slows down
The mind quietens
The rush of the day fading
A cooling breeze
Peace

Metropolis, And The London Tube
The great metropolis
Sound of traffic
Steel grey sky
Hint of a chill
The underground tunnel
Commuters wait
The train approaches
Wheels slow and clanky
The passengers board
Strangers
Silent, brooding perhaps
The journey begins
Through the tunnel
Out into the open
Past landmarks
Houses and factories and hills
The journey ends
The strangers descend
Another day on the tube
Sound of traffic
Steel grey sky
Hint of a chill
The underground tunnel
Commuters wait
The train approaches
Wheels slow and clanky
The passengers board

Silent, brooding perhaps
The journey begins

An English Desert, Heat
Dry rocks and sand-like dust. The grass has burnt away.
The temperature soars, but the journey goes on without an end in sight.
The hiker doesn’t know which way to go. He takes another sip of water from his pouch and studies the map.
Everywhere is identical and bleak, a desert in the middle of English countryside.

Everywhere is identical and bleak, a desert in the middle of English countryside.

An English Desert
Parched grass. A walk across fields and mounds where branches and weeds lie unconcealed, waiting to take thirsty hikers by surprise.
The midday heat bears down on the hiker, raw and unrelenting.
Fields surround the trail, each like the last, so that north and south and east and west merge, teasing the hiker with countless possibilities.
And still, the journey goes on.

Static Beauty
Static beauty, a landscape
A waterfall captured on film
A lake silent, the surface still
A hill, snow, a forest
The colours of a rainbow
The dawning of a new day
