What will it take to stop climate change?
To prevent the worst effects of climate change, we need to get to zero net greenhouse gas emissions in every sector of the economy within 50 years. Sign up to become a Gates Notes Insider and stay updated.

hemihead said:Yes. Interesting has this has changed somewhat. I think, regardless, face masks to limit both transmission and inhalation (accepting there are other cavities that are vulnerable) seems like a straight forward control.
My own models on death rates have continually needed adjustment in relation to the total US numbers, as well as here in NZ, yet the total infection rate has been the other way. So, excluding all the obvious reporting and testing issues, it is clearly more virulent but less fatal....and 10 days after lockdown the numbers always start to change steadily and surely.
Would be interesting maths if it wasn’t discussing death and lives undoing.
Yup. Social distancing is the only option we have at this point. Unless we want to unleash hades on the populations by lifting all restrictions and let the best man live ( I've actually heard that suggested ).

In all the hype of over-reporting numbers, this is interesting.
THE BIG LIE: 102 years ago, Charlotte leaders downplayed devastation of Spanish flu
In the autumn of 1918, Charlotte was fortunate, almost blessed, all but unique among peer cities, when the great influenza epidemic killed 13,000 in North Carolina. Swift action here kept infection and death rates mercifully low, authorities announced repeatedly.
For 102 years, that lie has gone unchallenged.
But now, spurred by curiosity amid a new pandemic, an examination of archived Mecklenburg County death certificates by The Charlotte Observer and a parsing of century-old news accounts reveal that Charlotte leaders — enabled by an acquiescent press and accepting public — systematically under-reported the 1918 death toll by half.

Long, but valuable read:
Chomsky and Pollin: To Heal From COVID-19, We Must Imagine a Different World
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caught the world unprepared, and the economic, social and political consequences of the pandemic are expected to be dramatic, in spite of recent pledges by leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies to inject $5 trillion into the global economy in order to spur economic recovery.
But what lessons can we learn from this pandemic? Will the coronavirus crisis lead to a new way of organizing society — one that conceives of a social and political order where profits are not above people?
In this exclusive interview with Truthout, public intellectual Noam Chomsky and economist Robert Pollin tackle these questions.

I don't believe they're 'tone deaf' as much as they are in a pickle. WTF are they supposed to do? Choose life or livelihood? A hell of a decision to have to make, being they took an oath to save lives; they can't give advice contrary to that.
It’s disappointing that so many of the medical experts and pundits pontificating in the press appear tone deaf to the very significant losses of life and blows to American families that may result from an extended economic shutdown.”
President Trump’s trade adviser warned that a prolonged shutdown of nonessential commerce could pose a more dire long-term health threat to the United States than the virus itself.

This narrative is so abhorrent to me, this equation: Economic problems = misery
In it contains so much ill in the world.
We have to keep burning fossil fuels because the economy.
We have to keep producing so much plastic because the economy.
We have to keep making weapons because the economy.
We have to strip the poor of basic human services because the economy.
"the economy" is just an idea, a set of rules, a construct.
We could change it any time we like, to anything we like, to protect anyone we like.
The game is rigged.
Chomsky is a bright light.

It's definitely backwards, Hemi.
Emergency Declared In Japanese Prefecture Hit By 2nd Wave Of Coronavirus Infections
Japan's Hokkaido prefecture, which accounted for the country's highest number of coronavirus infections as the pandemic initially swept through Asia, has seen a sudden uptick in cases, causing government officials there to declare a state of emergency less than a month after lifting a similar order.
The governor of Hokkaido, the country's northernmost main island and the largest prefecture by size, made the announcement Sunday following nearly a week of double-digit increases in cases in the prefecture, according to Kyodo news service.
"We are facing a crisis of a second wave in the spread of (the coronavirus) infections," Gov. Naomichi Suzuki told reporters in the capital, Sapporo.

Precisely - and the game is fundamentally rigged because of a money-system where Money = Debt + Interest.
Nothing can really change until this changes.
How this money-system came to be - well, I'll leave that for everyone to figure it out for themselves - but a good starting-point is the original "The Goldsmith's Tale" on youtube (which I think is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HdmA3vPbSU)

I don't want to be off topic. Been thinking on the virus and how it's been causing violence at home as well as political unrest.
Im leaning towards the idea that disease control is breaking down society so that the cure is now worse. 100,000 is the USA yearly suicide rate... WAS.

So, Jess, what do you suggest? That everyone go back to work despite the risk to thousands? Or, would you agree that covid-19 really caused none of this in relation to underlying mental illness and domestic violence? Would you perhaps agree that covid-19 has brought to light what is broken in our society, and that change is warranted. Would you agree that there aren't enough mental health resources to help others cope with situations like this? Would you agree that domestic violence hasn't been addressed as it should be?
What is your suggestion other than posting what covid-19 brought to light. Do you think opening up the country in the midst of a worldwide pandemic is going to treat mental illness? Or prevent domestic violence? Because I can tell you. . .it won't, anymore than it caused it.

Do you fully understand how many this is going to kill.
There are medical professionals saying regardless of the social isolation path we have chosen. People still would have died. Now because of the ramifications of what this is going to do to the global economy, millions will die in the next 10 15 years.

Do you fully understand what causes domestic violence and suicide? Are you a healthcare professional or psychologist? I am; and I worked with a domestic violence shelter for ten years; LONG before covid-19.
Want me to tell you what causes domestic violence? Physical abuse. Emotional abuse.
Medical abuse. Neglect. And lastly, Asshole control freaks.
A man who is abusing a woman or child had underlying mental health issues LONG before covid-19 ever surfaced. That is a documented fact.
Do you fully understand why people commit suicide? Mental Illness ( including depression ). Abuse ( domestic or bullying ). Loss. Anxiety. PTSD. Hopelessness. Et al.
Covid-19 has brought to light what is WRONG in our societies.* And one is the lack of QUALITY mental health resources for those in need. Here in America, the same president touting that social distancing will cause more suicides and domestic violence is the very president that repeatedly takes aim to cut quality mental health services from the budget year after year.
25,000 have died in America from covid-19 related illnesses, this includes people with underlying medical conditions ( asthma etc. ) that would've more than likely lived years longer had they not contracted it. That's an increase of over 15,000 in nine days. Nine days.
You cannot say how many more would be dead had we not gone into shelter in place. It could've been thousands more. Or hundreds. Who knows? No one. And that's the point.
You can guestimate all you want, and so can I, but at the end of the day we don't know how many may have or will die from covid-19, or it's lingering after-effects.
*Clarification REPEAT: I am not saying anyone who suffers from mental illness, depression, abuse, etc. are what is wrong with our societies; it's the lack of QUALITY mental health resources.
