Alla donna non piace la sua gonna;
Il ragazzo non legge un libro a palazzo.
Vedo l'ape sulla cena, ed il pollo in altalena.
Questo è quello che ho imparato su Duolingo.

Conosco aglio e olio, taglia e maglia,
Griglia e biglia, famiglia e bottiglia.
I miei preferiti sono cucchiaino, settimanalmente e rimangono.
Questo è quello che ho imparato su Duolingo.

Quanto, quando, quanti, quale,
Come, che, chi e cosa.
So come scriverli, dirli, ma non quale è quale.
Voglio imparare su Duolingo.

Mi piace studiare e imparare,
Ma l'app è troppo particolare.
Duolingo dice, "Traduci questo:
Vedo una bottiglia d'acqua
Fra le bottiglie de vino"
E io rispondo, "Chi vuole l'acqua?
Berrò il vino adesso!"
Non l'ho imparato su Duolingo.



The woman doesn't like her skirt;
The boy is not reading a book in the palace.
I see the bee on the dinner, and the chicken in a swing.

I know garlic and oil, cut and knit,
Grid and marble, family and bottle.
My favourites are teaspoon, weekly and remain.

How much, when, how many, which,
How, who, whom and what.
I can write them, say them, but know not which is which.
I want to learn on Duolingo.

I like to study and learn,
But the app is too particular.
Duolingo says, "Translate this:
I see a bottle of water
Among the bottles of wine"
And I say, "Who wants water? I'll drink the wine now! "
I didn't learn that on Duolingo.

Un anno fa,
ho iniziato un viaggio
con una nuova lingua.
Volevo una sfida,
una comprensione più profonda  
dei termini musicali,
e speravo di trovarti lì.
 
Mese 1: è facile!
Posso salutare
gli animali che incontro,
e c'è molto da mangiare.
Buongiorno, gatto!
L'ape è nello zucchero e
il mio pinguino vuole del pesce.
 
Ho trovato la scatola dei plurali
e la aprii con entusiasmo.
Gli animali si sono moltiplicati!
Erano con me
quando i colori si sono accesi:
le giraffe gialle, i gatti grigi e le marmotte marroni.
Mi sono fermata al negozio di abbigliamento
e ho comprato un cappotto colorato.
 
A volte,
mi sono interrogata.
Tante parole, e quale era quale?
Chi, cosa, quando, dove, perché?
Ho imparato a conoscere le occasioni e
deciso di chiedere aiuto.
Il poliziotto mi ha indicato alcuni aggettivi.
Alcuni utili costruttori hanno costruito un ponte,
e lo scaltro calzolaio mi ha messo una molla nel passo.
 
Ho attraversato il ponte
e ho trovato delle preposizioni!
Mi hanno guidato attraverso alcuni campi,
intorno ad un castello,
alla cima di una collina.
mi sono riposata sotto un albero,
di fronte a un lago increspato.
 
Ho imparato il passato prossimo
e mi sono girata a guardare la strada.
Non è stato facile, ma l'imperativo diceva:  
"Vai! Viaggia! Impara!"
Andando dritto
poi girando a destra,
mi sono imbattuta in Gerundio.
Mentre studiavo lì,
qualcuno mi stava parlando
sul tempo imperfetto.
 
Continuerò il mio viaggio
con il futuro.
Chissà dove porterà la strada?
Speravo di trovarti in questo viaggio
ma invece mi sono ritrovata —
E un rinnovato amore per
le mie parole e note musicali.
 
 
A Journey
 
One year ago,
I started a journey
with a new language.
I wanted a challenge,
a deeper understanding of musical terms,  
and I was hoping to find you there.
 
Month 1: it's easy!
I can say hello
to the animals I meet,
and there is plenty to eat.
Good morning, cat!
The bee is in the sugar
and my penguin wants some fish.
 
I found the box of plurals
and opened it with enthusiasm.
The animals multiplied!
They were with me
when the colours were switched on:
yellow giraffes, grey cats and brown marmots.
I stopped at the clothing store
and I bought a colourful coat.
 
Sometimes, I wondered.
So many words, and which was which?  
Who, what, when, where, why?
I learned about occupations,
and decided to ask for help.
The policeman pointed out some adjectives to me.
Some useful builders have built a bridge,  
and the clever shoemaker put a spring in my step.
 
I crossed the bridge
and I found prepositions!
They led me through some fields,
around a castle,
to the top of a hill.
I rested under a tree,
in front of a rippling lake.
 
I learned the perfect past tense
and turned to look at the road.
It wasn't easy, but the imperative said:
"Go! Travel! Learn!"
Going straight on, then turning right,
I ran into Gerunds.
While I was studying there,
someone was talking to me about the imperfect tense.
 
I will continue my journey
with the future tense.
Who knows where the road will lead?
I was hoping to find you on this trip
but instead I found myself -
And a renewed love for my words and musical notes.
