Poetry Contest

It's our very own version of National Poetry Writers Month!
In case you haven't heard, every year in the month of April, a huge event takes place, like butterflies emerging from their cocoons: the National Poetry Writing Month = NaPoWriMo, for short!

There've been DUP members who are participating in the WriMo elsewhere, but many of our poets here either don't know about this, or want to know if they can participate HERE.  The answer is YES, yes you can!  Even though the main event started April 1st, I'm starting our very own NaPoWriMo RIGHT HERE!  There's time to catch up, you've got A MONTH to submit 30 poems:  that averages a poem a day!  Don't worry, you can do it, because we are starting five days into the month, so everyone has through May 5th!

Now, here's how you do your entries: you can submit SIX entries of FIVE POEMS EACH.  So that's 6 x 5 = 30!

Submit each entry of 5 poems, every 5 days; SOONER if you're able!
1st entry (April 6-10) by April 10th.
2nd entry (April 11-15) by April 15th.
3rd entry (April 16-20) by April 20th.
4th entry (April 21-25) by April 25th.
5th entry (April 26-30) by April 30th.
Final entry (May 1-5) by May 5th.

Please, NO single poem entries.
YES, you can submit your six 5-poem entries earlier or later, as long as all six entries are in by May 5th, 2016.

I'll be posting reminders, and my own sets, as the weeks move on.  Yes, this is a true challenge, and it's a great exercise for writers who need or welcome the workout.

Those of you already doing the WriMo on FB are welcome to also post here. I'll kick things off with my first set (April 6-April 10) to give you the idea.  PM ME IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION.  Good luck, and have fun!

GUIDELINES-RULES:

1:  POEMS ONLY
2:  NO PROSE or PROSE POETRY
3:  NEW POEMS
4:  NO COLLABORATIONS
5:  NO EXTREME CONTENTS (ask if you're not sure!)
6:  NO IMAGES/ ART/ PHOTOS/ EMOJIS
7:  DATE & TITLE ALL INK

And, depending on how we do as the month progresses, I will pick judges, to assist when the time comes. Those seriously interested, please pm me, and thanks!
4/18/16: Update: the judges are now on hand and will assist in the final results after this competition closes.

Thank you, Geoffrey!  Yes, I've done so many challenges, I've lost track at times, and they ARE fun.

Btw, I've been fixing/modifying the dates of the entry schedule; I think I've got it finished now.  It shows which days to include in each entry.

Looking forward to see what you share with us!        --Jade

I've got one more to go in my current 30/30 on another site, don't think I'm up for another back to back 30 but lol I'm thinking about it anyway. This format being looser I may be able to get 'er done.

Well hello there!  Do I call you Trix?  I'm glad for your positive attitude: I've done a number of back-to-backs over the years, and the experience always had me feel like I'd emerged from an intense cross-country run.  Ready to collapse while having been reborn!

If you choose to participate, you'll be most welcomed.  I hope to see you back soon with your first entry, and thanks, Trix!

Hi Oxy!

Yes, you certainly can, and I'm glad to have you as a participant.  I'm about to post my first entry to show how to get started, and the way to do it, so it should be helpful, and be sure to read my intro & guidelines.  Have fun!

Hi all!  I'm posting this early, to serve as an aid/guide, a visual example, now that you are planning on your first pieces to write.

NaPoWriMo 2016
(April 6-10)

April 6th
reap

twilight's tidal ebb
of lunar phases
bows, acquiescing to

the tender fevers
of my body- how well
you know the response,

reveling in each other
to reap anew
ocean's bounty that awaits

April 7th
ritual

a pearlescent sheen of early dawn
echoes across the
summit of my spine

sustained
from where we left off while
honoring me during the ritual

leaving lip rings around my
healings, making them feel
desired by your homage

April 8th
ether

from a craft adrift my voice muffled by
distance stutters through the ether
and the ink blackness - I can see the sun

I'm surrounded by stars- suns that live
and die before my eyes my own sun
stands out because it's where you are...

again my feeble voice calls knowing
you can't hear but will dedicate the
rest of my life so that one day you will

April 9th
tides

our passion - the rippling heat
of a kalapana lava flow
that rushes down to the sea

where you first came to me
arms filled with the orchids
you placed in my hair

shining bright from the moon
that watched us there
making love on black sand

till you were taken away
on the wind of the tide,
and I to pine for your return

April 10th
geisha

kimono silks slowly fall
from my bare shoulders
and pool round my feet

waiting with averted eyes
your touch upon pale skin
trembling in your wake

your geisha bows low-
the floor carpeted from a
gentle rain of broken blossoms

I'll see what I can do to join in--The next 6 weeks are crazy busy for me and I may have to stick to one simple haiku per day just to keep up for lack of time, but will do what I can!

Hi Art!  I hope you do join the club; this is good therapy for poets, both new or highly experienced, and every level in between!  I have my first set up which will give you something to go by when you are ready to post your first entry.  And all kinds of poems can be written during the month.  Long, short, free verse, traditional, eastern short form, such a variety to try.

So enjoy, and good luck!

I'm a hard working woman - but perhaps - like MLavender already said-  a haiku a day ...? Interesting competition, Jade.

Hi there MadamLavender, and I certainly appreciate the dynamics in your life, and how you're impacted.  That's partly why I've worked out the entry schedule like I have, to give people something to go on, and it's a good way to keep track of one's progress.  However, if you can't submit your 5-poem entries every five days, it's not a problem as long as you don't leave it till the last minute, then it'll be crunch time, and that's when the exercise of the WriMo turns into a lode stone.  Do go at the pace you can manage, as long as you get your six entries in by May 5th.  There's a satisfaction in making the effort, like attempting a 26k run through L.A., or N.Y.C., and crossing the finish line after all the crowds have gone.  The thing is, you did it!

And btw, did you read where I'm going to need some crackerjack judges to assist when it's time?  Maybe if the load of writing proves too much?  So you do what you need to do, but it'll be sweet if I see you come by with that first entry, when you can, okay?  And thank you, ma'am!
