Poetry Contest

write to the given song and theme

Karen Kahan, also known as Wyndreth Berginsdottir, wrote this song in the 1990s, inspired by her Norse heritage and Heathenry (Norse/Germanic paganism)

Original lyrics
Savage Daughter

I am my mother's savage daughter
The one who runs barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

I am my mother's savage daughter
I will not cut my hair
I will not lower my voice

My mother's child is a savage
She looks for her omens in the colors of stones
In the faces of cats, in the falling of feathers
In the dancing of fire
In the curve of old bones

I am my mother's savage daughter
The one who runs barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

I am my mother's savage daughter
I will not cut my hair
I will not lower my voice

My mother's child dances in darkness
She sings heathen songs
By the light of the moon
And watches the stars and renames the planets
And dreams she can reach them
With a song and a broom

I am my mother's savage daughter
The one who runs barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

I am my mother's savage daughter
I will not cut my hair
I will not lower my voice

We are all brought forth out of darkness
Into this world, through blood and through pain
And deep in our bones, the old songs are waking
So sing them with voices of thunder and rain

We are our mother's savage daughters
The ones who run barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

We are our mother's savage daughters
We will not cut our hair
We will not lower our voice

We are our mother's savage daughters
The ones who run barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

We are our mother's savage daughters
We will not cut our hair
We will not lower our voice

We are our mother's savage daughters
The ones who run barefoot
Cursing sharp stones

We are our mother's savage daughters
We will not cut our hair
We will not lower our voice

The Former Heir Apparent

"Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in mothers --
as well as daughters."
-- a savage ethics
unforgivable

*

Here all your fat
full stored below
in puckered buttocks
bright-scarred belly
dimpled hips and thighs
though eons past
the blades disposed of
both your mammaries
sliced off
garbaged
time enough before my birth
my angel ribbon pin a princess Pepto Bismol pink
the yard sale to a buck translated
on my being resurrected not
from off the slab
to walk and
thrive.

You dead old pear --
up till my own death
secreted in the lump of frog-eyed rot
I used to peel your skin
oh
so
slow.

I am Dryad

a child of the earth
a flower of the soil
a voice of the air

a gossamer
breathing air
an amoeba

no reflections
nothing
I am Dryad

I exist not.

i have no cry.

my eyes, they speak
of a smile unwavering

for i know what you don't
i have no cry.

through all my chittering
of a land that i love

that i own and you don't
i have no cry.

the sun is my mother
she bathes and burns me

i see her, you won't
i have no cry.

one day i will shine
like my mother alive

bland clouds like you don't
i have no cry.

i need not to speak
of my prideful freedom

that i have and you don't
i have no cry.

battle cries for naught
when your enemy is deaf

i hear it, you won't
i have no cry.

My Savage Daughter

She was my first born
The one that I looked upon
With a perfect apgar score
No one else before
Was as good as her
Named after my
Grandmother
Just perfect
In every way
That could be
She was better than me
And I thanked God
That she wouldn't be
Anything like me
And I still believe
That she's better than me
With her Bachelor's degree
And her husband who seems
To love her
More than I ever could
More than her step dad
Ever would
Be able to
Because we weren't good
Enough for her
But that's okay
Because someday
She will see and
She'll understand
That we did everything
That we could
That we tried and
That that's not a lie
And we loved her
More than anything
That we could ever buy
I just hope she sees
The truth
Someday

Wild Child

seeking refuge evading no one in flickering light of smoldering hearth
dreaming in contrasting shadows

unshorn tresses adorned with twigs and leaves
words uttered without hush of whispers

prowling stalking beside tiger woman
partaking of feast shared with cougar and lynx

member of the pack neither alpha nor omega
energized revitalized by sunbeam caresses

elder trees display cryptic ciphers guided by
earthworm visions liberated by shadows embrace

confidently surfing atop earthquakes
feet warmed by earths molten fires

singing out with all her might fearless clarion
secrets abandoned

soaring in grass crafted spaceships
liberated amidst stars and attendant moons

assimilating earth mother’s occult message
living lusting yearning solving riddles of the rabbit hole

strident melody harmonizing with pulsatile rhythms
of creation

humming celestial rhapsodies speaking universal truths
sheltered by expansive sky

draped in rainbows cloaked in grassy verdant tones
iridescent as sister hummingbird steadfast as brother stone

guided by valiant father sun comprehending
existential cycles from joyful birth through dying breath

voice unrestrained essence unshackled
exposed vulnerable powerful

laid bare unashamed proclaiming crystal truths
shouting to devotees screaming twice to skeptics

unshadowed by fear
feral spirit shouting her thunderous reality:

i am gaia’s untamed offspring wild and free!

A she progeny cursed

Erupts like a dormant gurgling spring
beds of hot coals cant burn her feet
a source, tumbling `or stones, advancing
beware, and best luck if you compete

Came from the womb, sense of menace forming
with the attitude of flaming hair
carrying a red triangle warning
"whatever- I don`t care"

Her life of lace and tattered rags
the morals were trampled
mysteries, the runes foretold, strewn from the muslin bag
no homespun Goddess, just a wild example

not held, or restrained
this wild mare paws the air
her mother wails with loud complaints
domesticity and lacking manners fair

That missing knitted bond
frustrated love spread with despair
comb cant unpick a ticking bomb
tread the path no others dare

 Abandoned dance, torso and limbs
its origin follows any feckless whim
replica Josephine Baker dwells within
a cavorting mind, subconscious vim

A free spirit born to fight and wrestle
an  aching wish, that never will subside
My she angel, witch or devil
the other me, lies deep inside
