thanks, slipalong, this competition is based on empathy. BAME is an acronym widely used in the uk to mean black and minority ethnic and is used usually in context to providing an ethnic minority space in typically white dominated institutions. examples include art galleries, poetry collections, and community projects.

if you consider yourself a member of an ethnic minority, you may post an entry 🖤

Anger of Raked over Coals

Where was the wasted warmth
so long ago, the vital spark afore
as we were harvested and shipped ashore
cold ground beneath our feet, abhorred
wound cut deep that never bled

Our roots we left behind, still anchored deep
the pot of brotherhood, hangs o'er the fire
an echo of drums and dancing feet
the spirits, call to one empire
so deep the hurt, so dire the need

Oppressions chains, bit like the devils kiss
white overlords the optimist's of greed
and all minorities, the urinal on which to piss
Martin Luther's dream never to concede
our colour, will always say believe

For am I white but feel your dark inside
to suffer with tide of right'
the stain of we feel in your outcry
and break the mould, not pacified
rise up, not dormant laid like screed

In remnant embers lie your hopes
and suffering, a Phoenix of identity
in happiness its shores and slopes
fire rekindled, sums todays philosophy
from each ghetto, breaking free

The Bottom of The L.A River

Injustice fed by piecemeal ground
to a fine powder mixed with flouride
and water from the bottom
of the LA river
 Like scavengers we feed
on subsistence,
nurse the toddy

Labeled a degenerate wet back
Our culture dejected, pattern,
thrown into preformed Anglo shapes
You don't know,

who I am

Laying ourselves down
on sheets of mica, honor kept
in books no longer used
stacked high as a nightstand
beside our multidimensional
dream filled mattress.

We sink, the sleeper cheapens reality
Deceived we  build furrows with
broken collarbone's of our ancestors

Tending gardens of hope where rabbits
and hares run screaming, for Alice
to rescue those who sink into the sieve,

who's reality ?

Generations,
their nescient behavior ingrained,
instinctually trying to escape.
Forever pasted  into a collage

Irregularities are not the imparities.
Nothing  could revive our faith
made numb by the whore,
 in her well of abundance

Tear off my ear spare me her lies.
Cauterise my sight I can't look
any longer at the spreading
of your spores your righteous indignation

The illusion instilled in me
has died, giving birth to a blackbird
who devours hate.
Far he travels to find your seeds
sprouting in desolate barren fields
where humans don't tread

Will peace be seen within
this formulated captivity?

Diversity

Rolling down Crenshaw Boulevard,
The fall of nineteen eighty-nine,
Hanging out with the seniors,
Blasting NWA that one time…

It was my introduction to hip hop culture,
Accepted by others who were different than me,
A brown skinny nerdy fifteen year old kid,
Discovering an expression that was revolutionary.

See, when you’re an inner-city youth,
You live in a melting pot of various races,
Our school may have had tensions but to tell the truth,
I’m glad I saw so many different faces.

But us band kids, we were a special kind,
We worked hard because we had a common goal,
In all honesty, it was a second family,
It felt as if diversity completes the soul.

That time Edwin and Alfred and Marcio and I,
Ditched school just to do some wild shit,
As Fuck tha Police blasted out the speakers,
I felt a little cool because everyone could spit.

Over the years I made friendships across different cultures,
I’ve learned about struggles and personal histories,
They’ve been my friends, co-workers and family,
And that’s why #blacklivesmatter to me.
