Poetry Contest Description
Poets of DU, the end is near… but before the lights go out and the doors close forever, it’s time for one last dance on a carnival cruise off the Mexico riviera with your host, Alexander Case.
Let's face it... the farewell cruise poetry comp was on course to hit an iceberg!!
The Scenario
THE SHIP HAS BEEN HIJACKED!!!
A crew of old hopeless romantic pirates have seized control, and they don’t want fortune, they don’t want infamy... they want the greatest love poetry on the deep, deep, deep seven seas!

The DU poets are lined up on deck as the infamous Captain Lovebird paces menacingly before them. His gaze sweeps across the line of hardened [yet deliciously soft-centred] poets. He cocks his shotgun, presses the double barrel against your skull and he leans in so close you can smell… Dior Sauvage.
“This is your last chance,” he growls. “Write the greatest love poem of your life... or die!”
The Challenge
Write a new love poem... Captain Lovebird and I don’t give a fuck what kind of love it is... make it dark moody love, erotic love, vengeful love, drug-fucked love, narcissistic love or voyeur [slash] stalker love. Just write something new and passionate for the love of god!
Guidelines & Rules
- New poems only – no previously written pieces
- Maximum 250 words
- Unlimited entries – enter as many times as you like
- Collabs are welcome – grab a poet and sail off together
- The winning poet will be featured in the DUP preservation anthology.

I guess my question would be, do we need permission to include other DUP members by their username, or can we just go for it, balls to the wall?! of course assuming whoever does that, doesn’t use any disparaging language or what not keeping in mind that this is all for fun.

Yes, this is all for fun, but we all must be respectful at the same time If one wants to go balls to the wall or balls deep, I think it’d be a good idea to get consent… alternatively, one may choose to go balls to the wall or balls deep with themselves to avoid the risk ofnot offending someone, thus making themselves the butt of their own jokes at their own expense… making fun of oneself is what’ good comedy is all about.
If you think you may be venturing over the border into offensive territory, then I suggest you get someone to review your poem and/or ask permission before you post your entry.
Alternatively, you can direct your balls deep humour toward’s case… I’ve heard that asshole has no ego and wears kevlar underwear into gay bars just for kicks… did you see what I did there? Bulletproof!

I never can say goodbye
Beneath the moon's cold, silver glare.
The poets gather, a devilish affair.
Quills and ink, their weapons of choice.
Whispering verses in a haunting voice.
Candles flicker casting shadows tall.
Words of sorrow echo through the hall.
A waltz of despair, their final refrain.
Dancing with demons, embracing the pain.
The air grows thick with a fiery glow.
Laughter erupts, both high and low.
Each stanza a dagger, sharp and precise.
A farewell carved in poetic vice.
The clock strikes twelve, the end draws near.
Yet no one departs, consumed by fear.
Their words ignite, a blazing pyre.
A requiem sung by a ghostly choir.
As dawn approaches the ink runs dry.
The poets dissolve with a mournful sigh.
Their legacy lingers, a cursed art.
A diabolical dance etched in the heart.

My tongue is tapping the roof of my mouth
Seeing daylight
peaking through
the little crack
in your window
us, laying like
marble statues
sealed in small
time frames
as other peoples
faces mould into
the same old
questions
over and over,
our lips refuse
parting unless
they're about
to meet one
another in
the middle
again.

A Farewell to DUville Residents
within my glowing screen words take flight
the portal opens a gathering of souls
congregation of people in silent nights
weaving their worlds in soft twilight
Cryptic lines as riddles to find
philosophies that bent the mind
erotica written seductive whispers
tender and raw in inviting
verses
we wrote of love with tender grace
wove words that pined of days gone by
memories regrets passion and wishes
yet another wrote with logic firm
embrace practical truth someone's way
beautiful thoughts as gifts in bright display
how the pages breathed with life
my friends and neighbours in DUville
stanza written with joy and strife
laughter and tears were shared
in the sanctuary we stayed a while
to heal our hearts of heartbreak pain
I will miss the warmth the tender sound
of voices though at times discordant
rising together from underground
each word written like a prayer
But now the curtain will fall soon
my skies grow dim with the fading moon.
heart loving beat is almost done
will stop when DU's curtain fall
the portal opens a gathering of souls
congregation of people in silent nights
weaving their worlds in soft twilight
Cryptic lines as riddles to find
philosophies that bent the mind

I had a dream that everyone on DUP actually went on this mad cruise. The ship took everyone to a warm island. Then some kind of regency masked ball took place in the ruins of a palace. Everything had a purple dusk to it, and everyone was dressed in flamboyant clothing from different parts of history, and different parts of the world. And there was a lot of stairs like Escher's relativity. We were all going up and down stairs. And some people hooked up. And some people got very drunk, and some people cried. There was music and there was a constant twilight. It was always twilight and then I woke up.

Let's face it... the farewell cruise poetry comp was on course to hit an iceberg!!
The cruise ship has been hijacked!!!

Read my first post to find out more details on the PLUNDER MY HEART OR DIE poem competition. The winning poet will walk away with their life and an opportunity to feature in the DUP preservation anthology… if you don’t win… well, unfortunately you’ll be figuratively dead, so you could be battling it out for a few empty spaces in the memorials.

The Last Voyage of the D.U.P.
The last voyage of the ship, the D.U.P.
Has been given a deadline to meet its fate
But in the meantime everyone gets together
Its members come aboard to celebrate
In the engine room the rhymers are rhyming
Spittin’ unforgettable fire like writing memoirs
Saying their farewells to this magical place
Like catching shooting stars in verses and bars
In some dark corners the erotics are still spilling
Titillating and tantalizing making readers sweat
With palpable deliveries amidst the festivities
Their torrid intense lines get ‘em hard and wet
In the barroom there are plenty of libations
A celebration of poets remembering the times
The music is loud mixed with laughter in the crowd
Some reciting their favorite lines and rhymes
In the ballroom poets are joyously dancing
Dressed in their best, dressed to the nines
Some converse while there’s clinking of glasses
Celebrating with champagne and wine
In the deck the romantics watch the sunset
Deep in conversation feeling the cool breeze
Appreciative of the time they’ve spent together
The company and camaraderie brought them peace
In the halls the nostalgics take pictures of the walls
The stories told and shared throughout this trip
You can even hear some poems like ghostly echoes
The poetry is carved into the columns of this ship
They dance, they drink, they recount and tell tales
Shedding tears for years of memories weighing a ton
A bit sad but glad the universe brought us together
Because Deep Underground Poetry had a great run

Wallyroo, what a way to picture what we are doing in the last days of DUP, sums up how different poets are dealing with it, being active. Thank you.

unapologetically deepunderground was love
the shadows have collected tending their garden grey
it is a sacred place to be outlived
the mists collect and rise
carrying their words with them
singing as they go, farewell
still some hardy dwellers have stayed
to tend to melancholy and sorrow
to see the garden grieve
deep under the ground, they were allowed to be themselves
Surely nowhere else would be as forgiving
with politically correct speech being the norm
They know only unfiltered honesty
real emotions sewn so carefully of grief, joy, and love
creating a starry quilt they slumber under every night
a collection of starlings who took comfort in gathering together
now a cemetery of names
of souls they loved and are now missing
they tend to their poetics, carefully carrying the spirit of each one
grieving as they go their tears the sun these unique words
continue to grow by
uniting the beings they fly
sparking the night fantastic
others will come so enamored by the truthfulness of these tomes
and copy bits to carry with them
It is both a blessing and a curse
but our words will live on in the immortal
traveling at light speed to greet otherworldly beings
to know deepunderground was love
