To all my Floridian, Georgian, and Carolina friends, hoping you've evacuated or are at least safely hunkered down for this cat 4 "catastrophic" and "unsurvivable" hurricane about to make land. We've had tornado warnings and are under a flood watch through tomorrow night. It hasn't stopped raining all day with more to come overnight and all day tomorrow too.

Please take this seriously. I've lived through a cat 5 storm and it's horrifying.

No power for three hours now. Tornado warnings. Flooding. Yard looks like a war zone and downtown Boone looks like Venice.

Could've sworn I heard someone outside yelling, "Auntie Em! Auntie Em!" 🌀🌪🍁🍂🌿🌊🚣

Oh and the pressure of this front is unbelievable. My head feels like it's in a vice.

I am so grateful that all I've experienced is a power loss. Chimney Rock downtown has been washed away. Boone is underwater. And I know my Asheville family is OK but I can’t reach them.

Oh, and the parkway is closed.

I'm doing well! Been taking it easy lately, classes started again just recently so I have less free time, but I manage to find time to read a good book.

Me-- I am absolutely physically exhausted from work, this year, especially this week.  The healthcare system that I work for, is standardizing all the laboratories at each campus, by swapping out all the machines that run the blood + urine tests.  It's a massive undertaking, numerous studies need to be done before we can use an analyzer and it takes a team of people to make it happen.

I manage the chemistry & urinalysis labs at 3 of the campuses and I'm tasked with 4 new chem analyzers & 4 urine ones.  The one you see in the photo, is the biggest chem analyzer I'm implementing and we went live with two of them , on Tuesday this week.  It was a complete shit show, stressful & a 13 hour shift for me.

Each day got better as this week progressed, and I have one more machine to get running by December 2, our next go-live date.  Already did the first of these back in June, and I delegated the urine analyzers to another manager because it's physically impossible to do all that got dumped on me in the timeframe they want it done

So yeah -- I will be sleeping most of this weekend to recover from all the hours I worked this week.  My main consolation is that when a platform change comes around again, I'll be long retired --- we get anywhere from 8 to 14 years out of a lab analyzer depending on which one it is.

The first photo was taken the day before Helene

When I said downtown Chimney Rock is washed away, I mean washed away. Poor Boone. . .Asheville is down, all communication towers and roads. Only way to reach them is by air.

Hope everyone is having a fun and fabulous Halloween season!

Over at the landfill, we've been getting hounded by the US Army Corps of Engineers, who'd like to take over to get rid of a massive amount of damage from Helene, I mean a huge amount, tons and tons all sprawled out on the lake where it washed in from the New River with record floods. FEMA comes in with these guys, want to take over our whole site, dig where they want, build towers to inspect the loads in the trucks, and other ridiculous ideas. People think waste management is just watching people put stuff in a dumpster or something. We have a thing called DEQ, the Dept of Environmental Quality, that audits everything we do, from where we compact trash for burial to how we dispose of toxic chemicals to keeping leachate contained to what we write down on our paperwork and the collection of tipping fees. Thank the gods for the overriding legal power of DEQ, cuz those fuckers wanted us to work for 120 days straight! Gov Youngkin tried to make us do it in 60 and was told hell-to-the-naw before they even got to us. You can't just cram waste all together all of a sudden lol. You don't want that leachate getting out and into drinking water! How many environmental catastrophes are but a breath away? Hopefully, your local landfills are as dutiful as ours. If the EPA were to show up, it would likely mean everyone is fired lol. There are people in this business who do not fuck around. Hopefully, things will work out and we won't have to kill ourselves too much. I know the Army guys will work hard but they need to understand that there are factors involved with waste disposal that even these brilliant engineers are unaware of. The mother fucks. Anyway, just letting out a li'l steam. Rant over lol

Happy Hallloween season!! I haven't had any free time for horror flicks but I hope to make some very soon! Maybe tonight....

Thanks for checking in. I've been wondering how you were faring up there, especially given your profession. Happy someone had your back and stood their ground. I've heard a lot of stories about people torn between working to death and getting the work done for the local businesses, as this is one of their busiest seasons. I just cancelled a weekend trip due to the hurricane. I make an annual trek from Lake Lure through Chimney Rock and into Asheville ever year for the leaves.

I wish there was more I could do outside of donations.

Hopefully you can have some time to rest and enjoy the season somewhat now.
