Wishing

Would I were a child again
before the claws of time
tore away my innocence
made happiness a crime

Good friends I loved have left me
to keep appointments in the sky
and when you become
the last to leave
your world begins to die

The trees outside my window
have shed their leaves once more
as another fearful winter
is darkening the door

Pale memories of summer
will not warm the chill
When I was a child
I never felt this ill

My energy is broken
frail heart beyond repair
when once I climbed
in leaps and bounds
to conquer every stair

Now you wheel me to the window
and feed me with a spoon
while I dream of jumping up
and flying to the moon

I hear whispers on the wind
growing louder day by day
How they beckon from the stars:
Are you coming out
to play?

Would You...Could You....(will you)

would you
serve
the one
who wants
you more
than life

never
waivering
in trust
of the
dedication
I offer

would you
see my
dark soul
as I see
your beautiful
shades of grey

knowing
that this
bond
is undeniable
unshakeable
unbrakable

would you
offer up
everything
to who
is truly
meant for you

be closer
in breath
in skin
than
sanity
will allow

Of socks and clocks

The day lies
spread-eagled before me
passive and ready
to bend to my will,
And I sit, impotent,
paralyzed...

Like socks in the dryer,
I'm watching
tumbles and jumbles
of wants and shoulds
cycling through my head,
never settling on a course of action

My mind's eye follows one
for a while
and I've almost decided --
when an abrupt shift of colour and texture
whisks it out of sight,
out of mind...
and they just keep taking turns
flopping around, never settling
as I stare,
blink,
try to focus

                                           I should get this done
I finally have time for that
                              This is on my list
                         I said I'd do that
                   I should really finish this
I want to get started on that
       I want this
I should that

And the clock is relentless.

Every tick bashing me over the head with facts,
every tock tsk-tsk'ing about opportunities wasted.

At the end of the day there's only time for obligations
and neatly folded socks
tucked away in a drawer
with the rest of the dreams.

Jangly Bones

On the eve of her death lay a ballad composed
With her mouth wide open
and his eyes closed
From deep velvet mellowed out baritones
He conjured up a love-song
from
her jangly bones

Whittling away on splintered body parts
And the charred remains of her skeleton heart
He played her like wind-chimes made of pearl-string stones
In fresh river water
over her jangly bones

I witnessed him
Rip the bones from her flesh
Even before she’d been laid to rest
And then when she’d not long been buried
I saw him
Dig her free from a gnarly grave
And dismantle the rest of her body
bone by bone
piece by piece
Natures redress
Hanging carelessly off tethered
flesh

Then sculpting from her remains
a rattlesnake instrument
crooning
to the angles of the moonlight
Cluttery cymbals chiming out a resounding symphony
Sounding out notes
from piano keys
fashioned
from her hands and ribs
and ears and feet

Hanging limp and cold this vixen queen moulds
a plastic mannequin of left over skin and bones
melted out of salty sticks and the blood of stones
conjuring up a rhapsody of musical tricks

Scuttling up up up
to shake rattle stir
onto the mountain of skittles of spidery legs
Then the squeezing release of orbital jelly
splashing beetle juice
over hollowed out eyes

Leaving the smoky wood flavour of her dried and wrinkled pulp
and scorched carcass withered with the memories of his most concealed secrets
Then finally
he left her
blowing by the remains of her skin
and hair and lashes

I laid to rest her jangly bones
Surrendering her memories
Piece by piece
Bone by bone
Committing her musical composition to my mind and soul
Her altered carcass starting to soften
In the dirt and the sun
Vowing
She would not be forgotten

The unbearable lightness of being

looking back
over the shoulder
of time
reflective moments
step into the light

so you dust
them off
and amplify all
the old voices
as they continue
to find ways
into your life

here you sit
submerged
in memories
that have resurfaced
without warning

here you sit
cornered
by the ambiguity
of this self
that hides amid
the ticking hands
of time

here you sit
trapped
in this vicious
circle of repetition
and boredom

a precious dry rose

A
garden
of redroses
was smiling
in front of me,
but I loved only
the red rose that
died and was
hidden in
my
diary.
Neither
it
was
scented
nor
it
was
to
be
valued.

But for me it was priceless
as it was somehow alive as
a memory in the dilapidated pages..
n  I am very happy about..!

The Poem of My Life

I do long to live a life
as brilliant as a keen knife
able to somehow cut
through the banality of now

Making more than mere sense
in past or present tense
in a way that tickles the ear
that endears me to myself

For each stanza is a stage
performing for us sage
lulling with rhyming lines
inspiring within its form

So what then may I say
in some new eloquent way
to warm the human heart
melt all of this urbane snow

Allow me to drink the dry ink
tiptoe on the abrupt brink
of a jagged line break

with absolutely nothing left to fake

fraGRANcy!

My grandson
Has inherited quite a lot
He has the same birthmark
That ive got, in the same spot

Just at the back of the neck
My daughter has it too
A quirky thing to inherit
But nothing particular new

Hope he doesn't
Inherit my sense of humour
Or both his parents youthful over indulgency
Im sure they're just a rumour

I'm still sixteen
Or so i'd like to think
I may grow up one day
Although not likely, sayeth i, with a mischievous wink

In seventeen years, therefore
My grandson would be older than me
Even though by then
I'll physically be, eighty three!
(It may depend on my poses
Whether i come up smelling of roses?)
