The Ukraine / NATO/ Russia War
Western forces are playing this incredibly callously. They could supply the arms and technologies to stop this war today, and they are also completely aware of the deal Ukraine would take if there were genuine peace talks.
The west (US led) are making a conscious decision to give Ukraine only enough weapons/weapons systems to keep total Russian forces at bay, specifically with the aim of doing multi-generational harm to Russia.
A reminder about all the talk about how bad the Russian army is…Russia still has huge resources they can bring to bear, and a further reminder they are not yet on a war footing. Moving to a war footing means diverting your entire internal manpower and manufacturing base to the war effort. Doing this would be a massive shift in their abilities. Their strategy is clear and simple…the early and hard tank assault has failed due to an underestimation of modern shoulder-mounted weapons (modernish anyway), so they are now moving to their standard doctrine of heavy artillery bombardment. Shells and big guns are pretty cheap and they can make both internally. That’s now the playbook and it will work.
The west is hoping to crush Russia, as well as get regime change. What they haven’t successfully predicted is the strength of the Rouble, and the oil/energy crisis the planet is facing (supply, refining and storage are all in serious trouble). Russian foreign income has gone up since the start of the conflict, and it’s hard to see how Europe can come off their energy needs from
Russia at speed. European wishfull thinking like signing energy deals is just that, as they don’t have the shipping/handling infrastructure for alternate energy sources like LNG.
Long term, European countries and the world in general are going through a massive armaments build-up using Russian and Chinese tensions as their excuse. I think it’s true that many see the coming resource shortages and the associated refugee crisis as the real threats and that’s what’s really being armed-up for. In the next 50 years huge parts of the planet will face lack of water and food, general environmental degradation and general resource shortages. Something like 1 billion people will get on the move as refugees. Arms will be used to protect borders and resources.
China is currently undergoing a run on their banks, and large amounts of civil unrest, which is why the Chinese government is so aggressive with foreign countries, as an attempt to divert attention internally to outside enemies. Medium term China will push harder to try to secure access to resources, especially energy. Taiwan will fall, and the west will capitulate on their protection promise. Expect a Pacific war in less than 5 years with a 70% probability (source is US Pacific fleet projections on US/China tensions….self-fulfilling).
We are entering a new period. It will be based on energy and resource scarcity, will divide the planet in to trading blocks much more strongly, and will involve significant starvation and war. This is the start.
The Russian conflict only has three outcomes, plus two side options. Ukraine is completely destroyed and becomes Russian. Ukraine is almost destroyed, and becomes a vassal state. Ukraine is almost destroyed, and gives up massive territory, but remains a state (in name only). The other two options are Putin dies and the very dangerous moment of a power vacuum is resolved by a leader or party who does a deal to buy out of the war, or more likely the world is dragged in to a world war and 1/3 of the world’s population dies.
Nuclear war not discussed. Even the Russians using a battlefield nuke (which is in their doctrine and they do have armaments for) would be unlikely to provoke a western nuclear response.
The next two years is going to be bad…and our luckiest outcome would be if it improves after that. The almost certain outcome is however increasing global instability and war/famine.
Plant food. Make a plan.
(Side note….yes this war is the West’s fault. Over 20 years the west has consistently not acted on one Russian act of aggression after another. Obama even said “don’t cross this line” the Russia did and there were no consequences. That weakness of resolve lead Putin to conclude he could act with impunity. have a look at the Minsk agreement Ukraine signed up to but never implemented and to be fair was never pressured to effectively by the other signatories aligned to the then Ukrainian administration
they are all important components to understanding or at least partly understanding why there is a war and who are the players within it
