Firstly, thank you for being respectful. I appreciate it.

Secondly, I understand what you are saying; however, will point out that yes, we ( and I am referring to the U.S. ) did lock down during the 1918 pandemic: it saved thousands of lives. This is nothing new, except to the younger generation who may never have heard of such. Furthermore, I have seen both sides, the compliant and the rebel take their compliance and/or rebellion too far.  While silence may be considered consent; anarchy creates undue damage and suffering.

Lastly, this virus is real.  Regardless of whether or not it was lab-created or it's the Mother's way of administering natural selection; it's real. Whether or not the stats have been under or over-reported; it's real. Some who have blatantly disrespected its power are still alive, while others are not. And we are talking younger individuals, not older.

My point ( the portion of my quote you selected to  use ) is that while we here in the U.S. were bickering and fighting one another over what we would or would not do, New Zealand was locking down hard and tight. And while we here in the U.S. were still bickering and fighting one another over whose fault  lack of action was and what course we should take, New Zealand was levelling the  the curve. And while we here in the U.S. are arguing over facemasks and if school is going to start in the fall so we can get on with our lives, New Zealand flattened the curve, and is back in full swing with no restrictions whatsoever.

So, are you going to try to tell me that lockdowns don't work? They don't flatten the curve until eliminated completely? Where is New Zealand's spike in covid-19 because of lockdown destroying their immunities? Right. There wasn't one.

We have two global models. Which worked? Which was smart and which ignorant?

Which participants in this thread ( and Part I - including you and me ) were right about lockdowns?  And who was wrong about fighting them because freedoms?

You can rebuild an economy; you can't bring back a human life that was someone's mother, father, sister, brother, and so forth. One need only look to New Zealand for living proof of that fact.

I get what you're saying, and we should all pay close attention to what the powers-that-be are creating in the form of smoke and mirrors ( particularly during this election ); however, we also need to open our eyes and see what has worked, and what has not. And honestly admit that fact despite our ego.

Much respect for your state, for the careful planning that went into this plan.
There is obvious wisdom behind the words as opposed to fear or political gain.
It becoming  obvious that the methods being used to clean and disinfect maybe should have been practice all along to some degree anyway
Banks, gyms, hair dressers, it makes one feel safer anyway
My Spec Ed students were susceptible to virus colds and flu
My aides were diligent with the disinfectant and gloves which we called Universal Precaution

Governor Cooper has been phenomenal throughout this despite the pressure he's been under. He's doing everything he can to meet both sides halfway; however, both sides have got to be willing to give too. And for the most part, they are.

Meanwhile, back to race talks ( and another thing that isn't new ):

Where did ‘No justice, no peace’ come from?

Mark Duggan’s supporters are using a slogan with a surprisingly long history among the chanting classes

The chant No justice, no peace by supporters of Mark Duggan, the drug gangster shot dead by police in 2011, sounded more like a threat than a prediction. No one knows the originator of the slogan, but that is not surprising. It is a commonplace of the struggle.

In 2011, for example, a pair of artists called Mikkel Floher and Rasmus Nielsen put on an exhibition called No Justice No Peace at a gallery in Frederiksberg, Denmark. The artists are ‘united by a common sense of injustice and indignation’. They should meet my husband.

No justice, no peace has been around since the 1970s among the chanting classes. Some contributors to a moderately intelligent blog called Language Log said that No justice, no peace reminded them of notices in the form: No drinking. No dogs. But, as with the legendary No Irish. No dogs. No blacks, the sign does not suggest that one thing would lead to the other.

More surprising is a widespread ignorance of the meaning of Bob Marley’s lyric No woman no cry. It does not mean that without a woman in one’s life there is no need to cry. It merely follows the standard form of the Jamaican negative imperative, meaning ‘Don’t cry, woman.’

No justice, no peace uses the logical form of the American revolutionary slogan No taxation without representation, and the literal form of James VI’s No bishop, no King. James was not of course threatening that if bishops were abolished he jolly well wouldn’t continue as king.

A century earlier, William Tyndale said that there was a proverb, No penny, no pardon, taken, I suppose, from the pardoner’s trade in indulgences granted for almsgiving. Another dead proverb, remembered in the 17th century, was No penny, no Paternoster, or the variant, No longer pay, no longer pray. From later in that century comes No purchase, no pay. I’m not quite sure what that means: I think it refers to customs inspectors or, on the other side, pirates, who get their pay by confiscation. Perhaps someone can give historical particulars. A glorious revival of the formula by ambulance-chasing lawyers is No win, no fee, an apparent contradiction of the proverbial No pain, no gain.

Well said!

Yeah, a lot of the problems with these discussions stems from the misconception that because a person disagrees with Trump, that person is somehow how 100% hardcore Liberal, thus supportive of all policies and people Democrat, and thus is Pro Government.

Uhm ..... nope.

Which also explains why the one sided party bashing falls on deaf ears, whereas a level headed unbiased approach merits a healthy respectful response the likes of which Ahavati just offered.

How does "Liberal" mean Pro - Government , Johnny ?

Not saying you are wrong , but I thought Liberal was about "no government"
or one with fewer rules and laws , whereas Conservative meant more laws

The more extremist partisans perpetuate the opposite notions to mislead the general public.

Thank you. I'll be binge-watching the Dark Horse podcasts today, as I am extremely behind on that, but have been keeping up with their social networking posts.

I've been pondering the election really, really hard in my meditations and thoughts.  Do I want to support a two-party system that has failed this country? Would abstaining my vote get that message across. I finally concluded this morning that, no; it would not.

What it would do is lend power to those who are determined to keep the current administration in place. And, while I am no fan of the potential administration, I do not know conclusively what it will turn out to be. So I weigh knowledge over the unknown.

I want to be able to say I at least tried to change things. I am just one person and one vote. But to myself and what I must live with should things not change, I am enough.

My G'precious always accompanies me to the voting booth. I want him to see that he will be enough too.

“There is no true word that is not at the same time a praxis.
Thus, to speak a true word is to transform the world.”
― Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

i come not with a smooth massage
mine is an irksome message
for men, like dogs, wielding axes
wax void of human axis
no peace can i from you elicit
your claims to life illicit
your words but violence incite
verbose without faint insight
the evil games of hate you practice
with love maintains no praxis
good counsel finds no engagement
amidst earth’s vile enragement
no mercies through your thin veins course
your tongue conscribed to curse
bitter you make the purest palate
and pale the artist’s palette
the poor man’s wealth from him you gouge
the black man’s courage you gauge
as, tripping on your bloodstained vouge,
he slips from human ménage
i come not with a smooth massage
mine is an irksome message
the praxis of your sabotage
shall your own doomsday presage

COLOR LINES

it stuck in her craw,
that shit --
them actin'
as though white skin
was a ticket
to some
fancy banquet
where the livin'
was easy
and the money
flowed
and nobody
struggled
or was singled out
or shot
or arrested
and, shit,
she'd never owned
a slave,
never lynched
a soul,
didn't owe
nobody nothin'
and maybe if
they weren't so arrogant,
so goddamned demanding
'cause wasn't any
tearing up
or tearing down
going to change
anybody's
mind

Trying to catch up on some of the Dark Horse Podcasts with Dr's Brett Weinstein and Heather Heying this afternoon. One of the things I had seen on their social networking sites but didn't have enough information for was 'Articles of Unity 2020'.  I didn't want to repost or suggest until I knew a little bit more about its purpose.

To be honest, I think I am very tired ( it's been a busy week ) today, so will defer any coherent opinion to later this week to give me more time to read through the site thoroughly. But I did want to post this here so you could familiarize yourself. This movement is particularly geared toward those NOT wanting to vote in the upcoming election as well as unifying all people.

The Unity 2020 plan was designed to disempower both major parties. And it works! A survey of people volunteering to help shows support is drawn equally from Trump and Biden. 25% say they weren’t even intending to vote before #Unity2020. Consider that! http://ArticlesOfUnity.org

The Problem: Our Government Has Been Captured
After decades of neglect, our country is in crisis, and cynicism dominates the public mind.

Maybe you have felt this. Maybe you are worried about your family’s future. Or maybe you are simply a concerned citizen, witnessing recent events unfold and are troubled by what they seem to foreshadow.

You are not alone.

Our two dominant political parties are entirely consumed by partisan politics and are clearly uninterested in serious solutions to an ever-expanding list of problems they had a powerful hand in creating. More disturbingly, the tools we might use to remedy this situation, tools granted us by our founding documents, appear to have been dulled to the point of uselessness by the major parties — parties which, in those brilliant blueprints, are nowhere mentioned.

As a nation, we are navigating uncharted territory. In addition to partisan gridlock, we must rise to several new challenges:

We lack consensus, even about matters of basic fact, and the current tools of collective sense-making are unable to close the gap.

Our country is on the brink of economic catastrophe and we are hobbled by our dependence on an outsourced manufacturing base.

Massive protests reveal the depth of frustration, but these outpourings of genuine anger are all too easily co-opted and attention diverted away from root causes — while working class Americans demonize each other, those who captured our system and hoarded opportunity continue to flourish at our expense.

The world is losing confidence in America’s capacity to lead, even as Chinese geopolitical power expands. This could lead to catastrophic war in the absence of sober leadership.

Each of these challenges is daunting. Taken together, and mismanaged by our captured and dysfunctional government, the country finds itself in jeopardy. Divisive, partisan politics has hobbled our nation and battered our better angels — just when when we need them most.
