COLOR LINES

it stuck in her craw,
that shit --
them actin'
as though white skin
was a ticket
to some
fancy banquet
where the livin'
was easy
and the money
flowed
and nobody
struggled
or was singled out
or shot
or arrested
and, shit,
she'd never owned
a slave,
never lynched
a soul,
didn't owe
nobody nothin'
and maybe if
they weren't so arrogant,
so goddamned demanding
'cause wasn't any
tearing up
or tearing down
going to change
anybody's
mind
