Poetry Contest Description
The Classic Corner: E.E. Cummings Tribute
Co-Hosts - Ahavati & JohnnyBlaze
Part XX in an ongoing series introducing serious writers of DUP to the most well-known poets, both classical and modern.
Edward Estlin Cummings (October 14, 1894 – September 3, 1962), often styled as e e cummings, as he is attributed in many of his published works, was an American poet, painter, essayist, author and playwright. He wrote approximately 2,900 poems, two autobiographical novels, four plays and several essays.
Cummings is often regarded as one of the most important American poets of the 20th century, associated with modernist free-form poetry. Much of his work has idiosyncratic syntax and uses lower case spellings for poetic expression.
Guidelines
Write a new poem honoring Cummings inspired by any one or more of his poems. We feel listing particular poems may be constricting, and want you to follow the inspiration wherever it leads.
Do your best to make us feel as though we are reading poems by Cummings. The more we feel you "capturing his essence" in "your own words" , the higher you will score. This will involve choice of wording, delivery, subject material, formatting, target audience - a wide range of factors.
The Rules
1. One entry per DUP persona.
2. No erotica; this is open to all ages and can't be viewed with an ECW ( Extreme Content Warning ).
3. No exact word limit; however, attempt to keep it no more than 250 - 300.
4. Any form is acceptable ( but studying the poet is advised ).
5. Hashtag your poem #eecummings and link to your poem here. Do NOT copy paste your poem to the competition. The point is to eventually direct visitors searching for Cummings to your poem via the hashtag we hope will eventually be implemented by the Webmiss.
6. In your poem's notes, provide links to the poem by Cummings that inspired yours. Without these, we have no way of determining if you were truly inspired by Cummings or simply swapped fresh words into his existing poetry.
Comp will be judged by Ahavati & JohnnyBlaze.
You have one month; best of luck to all entrants!

it may not always be so; (after ee cummings )
it may not always be so; these stone
walls lining castle ruins, where these
fortresses of our heart seem invincible-
in love, their towering turrets a standard’s
base upon these dusty ramparts-
witnessing architecture wed landscape-
supporting our unyielding faith.
it may not always be so; victors
come and go; wars fought and lost-
as much as they are won; should
another champion capture your heart
as I myself have done, your attention
a profession of new-found love-
then, shall it be for you, cathedral’d
gowns and proclamations of vows-
But, for me, a letting go; and, such
funerary sounds hastening escape
to distant lands; broken heart intact.

XLV 'you' (into winter)
in winter
all worlds are
born to die (in you)
vacant it seems we are
born to live by love (it's true)
"unmoving we pass walking deaths
in idle breaths seldom seen by few"
(behind a dirtied pane you sit) beneath
some loveless halo of doom and hurry (worry)
as black leaves on a tree of life are (hiding)
all my selves in your minds grasp are (abiding)
I shall see you there (falling, recalling)
I shall grieve for the one heart that
died inside mine. what heart
you say mine
what is that you carry
(on and on) into
winter
.....

Evening forms
A murmuration, shape shifting, dipping, lifting
Night clouds, sliding sunset towards its roost
Faster than dawn. seems its closing form
It's golden palette soon absorbed
Into the rainbows darker hues
How quick the change indigo and blue
The chill of self reflection, lights the first star
Last notes of contentment the days orchestra
Shadows, the players that weaken and change
Descends to night, the first yawn unconstrained
Ties that eve
Its robes wrapped as darkness thieves
inspiration EE Cummings (Summer Silence)

of hand-crocheted doilies ordained for China
( after e.e. cummings )
of hand-crocheted doilies ordained for China or Romania,
the ladies of Lowell cluck and croon with slight of hand,
flurrying needles, clicking their skeins of dyed wool yarn,
are worn wing chairs with threadbare cushions, and are
sure of themselves in their love of Jesus, Eleanor, and the
war orphans, they wear pancake and sensible shoes and
read the classics between services, and gossip as they
bandy their quick glances, of a particular reverend and his
secretary, but all is right among these righteous Daughters
of the Mayflower and the church, where plans for the next
fund-raiser is met with geese going on about flour-less cake
and peanut brittle, with arms upraised, if only the sugar
would come down to them as manna from heaven, which
presently is the only place imagined in these times of ration.

frozen open in time
( after e.e. cummings )
1
from corners directions
greets breezes
to rise to plunge into
a surreal ness
2
these small ones with
humble blossom offerings
frozen open in time
before time after time
forever mute in their
open mouth prayer
that fills the mani cured
half abandoned gathered
like their voices that spill
from sorrow-filled eyes
in the darkness of dead
men waiting for the call

dive for dreams (E. E. Cummings Tribute)
Trust your heart and see where it goes
as it may lead you to a new destination.
We remember that we are living today
and may die tomorrow. You carry roses
and trek through patches of carnations.
You always follow and trace every ray
of sunshine with your fingertips, but you
also dive for dreams. The stars shine just
for you night after night and never forget
to live by love. Some day you will want to
remember your first love and all the trust
you had as you choose to never regret
anything. You crawl under the soft duvet.
