condolences

Although I am empty, not knowing which direction to go.
Your memory is with me, helping me grow.
In your love i have a home, a place few have ever known.
In your image i have strength.
A strength i can use to endure misfortune, at any given length.
Though you have left this physical plane, it's your admiration I wish to obtain.
This is not goodbye forever, just goodbye for now.
While i endure life's endeavors, I solemnly vow.
I'll see you in heaven, should God's grace allow.

Of Men and Metaphors

There are no descriptors
I could compare thee to:
no metaphor or simile

Some see you as shade—
  mountainous movement
  of shifting personality;
a constant, ever-changeling state
  canvasing darkness from light

Others pine for your passion
to entwine with their own—
a dreamscape:
  granting childhood wishes truth;
  a verification real intimacy exists

I see no comparison befitting
the caliber of a man's heart

It would only be a fraction
of your life, should I write
  “You are like a Rothschild’s Orchid;
    the rarest in the world."

Because orchids are not strong, nor warm;
but, possess a coldness to the touch

Their beauty does not swathe the stars
  nor fold first-light with their arms.
I shall not wake encased by soft petals
  of pink and purple, nor be quenched
  under white and yellow-ringed crest

There is no metaphor
  which grants you justice;
  there is only this truth:

You walk proudly, a man aware
  of his worth despite circumstance;
you eschew temptation for loyalty—
  vehemently defending what you love

Tell me, my Dearest Darling—
  what more is there to want
  in this miniscule Universe of Us

Thank you everyone for your submissions so far. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading them... it's nice to be able to inspire others and hear about their inspirations in turn. A beautiful trade-off if you ask me!

Emma Sits in Her Chair

Every time I get to sit with her,
My heart feels a deep connection to the past,
Sitting there with her I get to listen,
To the stories of simple yet hard times.

She’s almost ninety,
Small,
Frail,
But has an unrelenting spirit,
She’s been through a lifetime of changes
Of heartbreaks and triumphs,
She’s been through some harsh, tumultuous times,
And some she won’t dare disclose.

But my grandmother has always pushed her children,
And her children’s children to be the best,
Striving to move forward with opportunities that she never had.

And it’s here where I realize how much I admire her,
How much she inspires me to be better,
In her warm tone and words I’m able to find my motivation,
That if she was able to do it with the limited resources and education,
Then why can’t I?

Emma sits in her chair, humble and yet almost like a queen,
With a Bible nearby,
We call her the pillar of our family,
All of us feel her prayers,
All of us hear her advice,
Because her time is near,
I appreciate every precious moment I get with her.

Thank you all for your wonderful entries. I decided that in order to be fair, and to avoid any of potential bias', I would rather the competition be judged by public vote than picked by myself. Therefore, I requested a vote. If I had known how to do a vote sooner, that's the way I would have done it all along!

Edit: and don't vote for my 'entry'. This one was intended for someone else to win :)
