A Dying Dog - moaned for Death ( for Cooper/after Emily Dickinson )
A Dying Dog — moaned for Death
Despite how hard I begged —
I pleaded with the Universe
Until my knuckles bled —
His Loyalty — waned not once —
Though body — clearly did
His Spirit — steadfast in its goal
Returned — from whence it came—
'Twas not my lack of Belief that failed —
'Twas not His Will to Live —
But Both — in selfless Love released
The Other — from their Grief —
In Memory of my Beloved Cooper

your destined legacy –
This illumed anniversary:
one hundred eighty-eight –
Sealed your quill in drying ink
letters in passionate blaze –
I wonder – perchance –
did you [hear] a fly buzz –
or see the window darken in Death
as you penned you would –

Much Madness is Divinest Sense
Much madness
is divinest sense –
An eye that hath discerned the severest madness,
according to Emily’s judicious eyes, hath much sense –
The starker lunacy
be equated to divinity –
‘Tis common, unwritten law that we assent common beliefs
And ‘tis uncommon beliefs that common law demurs –
In this, as all overcome,
The stoic few as she will come –
Sanity hath common sanction
Or, you’re forthwith a risk –
Touched by a chain
And bound in shame –

I Throw A Page Up To The Wind
I throw a page up to the wind
And to all sense take sail.
In absence of all view of land,
No country will sight unveil.
The poorest can, and will embark
Unfearing toll of gale;
The frugal voyage - only this
Will rend the mind less frail!

(Frigate ships, such as the USS Constitution, one of the few still surviving today, were a type of tall sailing ship common in the 1800's; though built for early naval use and trade, they allowed toll free voyages to the poor.)

I Measure Every Grief I Meet
I measure every Grief I meet
According to my Log,
And make a mark when e’er repeat
To rudder through the fog.
A sexton with a feather’d quill,
The columns may accord.
As gentle Keeper of the Will,
And noted for the Lord.
A thankless task to other men,
As diggers from the Past.
But humble servant that I am,
With Lists of ev’ry caste.
My suit of rags is rent and torn,
To walk among the Dead.
Save only for the Mac’ I’ve worn
That keeps rain off my head.
The honor for the hosts interred
Millenniums to rot,
As long as I’ve a feather’d quill,
They shall not be forgot.

A sexton = a person who looks after church grounds, and formerly as a gravedigger.

Two Butterflies Went Out At Noon
Two Butterflies went out at Noon
With party hats and scarves.
They saved all year and very soon,
A merry Plan they carved.
They caper’d high and were in awe
Sight-seeing at the zoo.
They took in sights they never saw,
Had tea with macaroons.
They made a friend along the sea
With rainbow-colored hair.
Play’d hide & seek down by the quay,
That’s where they lost him there.
So on a whim they took a cruise
To Catalina Isle,
Where flowers bloom & cockatoos,
They might be gone a while.

I could suffice for Him, I knew
I could suffice for Him, I knew
When I was but a child.
To think of Him as Father, too,
Though was He meek and mild?
The way I know is opposite
From what is meant to be.
His voice intent, mine hesitant,
This force ‘tween God and me.
Yet to suffice and not forsake,

PoetsRevenge, your entry, "There Is No Frigate Like A Book (I Throw A Page Up To The Wind)" touched us deeply in regards to the association between passage and frigate metaphor! It was originally done and poignant in its essence. Therefore, you were awarded second place. Congratulations.
Jade, your entry "I Measure Every Grief I Meet" was awarded third place. We are going to be honest - it was a VERY tough call between you and PoetsRevenge; however, it came down to essence - and it was unanimous that she barely edged you out.

It’s taking me some minutes to compose myself after reading your awesome announcement. In fact, I just got off the phone with Geoff, and had read your words aloud to him once I saw you had posted to the comp’s forum. I had said to him “omg it’s happening!”

Where does one begin except to remove my knit cap from the cold air and thank you, Host Ahavati and co-Host JohnnyBlaze, for this wonderful competition for our Emily.
