Poetry Contest

The Classic Corner: Emily Dickinson Tribute

Co-Host - Johnny Blaze

Part VI in an ongoing series introducing serious writers of DUP to the most well-known poets, both classical and modern.

Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet.
Despite her prolific writing, fewer than a dozen of her poems were published during her lifetime. After her younger sister Lavinia discovered the collection of nearly 1800 poems, Dickinson's first volume was published four years after her death. Until Thomas H. Johnson published Dickinson's Complete Poems in 1955, Dickinson's poems were considerably edited and altered from their manuscript versions.

Since 1890 Dickinson has remained continuously in print.

Guidelines

As Dickinson's poetry rarely contained titles, you may choose and write a new poem honoring her from any of her published works.  The first line of your poem MUST also be the title.  The link to the poem that inspired you needs to be posted in the Author's notes of your DUP submission.

1.  One entry per DUP persona.

2. No erotica; this is open to all ages and can't be viewed with an ECW.

3. No exact word limit; however, most of Dickinson's work contained short lines, typically lack titles, and often use slant rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation.

4. Any form is acceptable.

5. Hashtag #EmilyDickinson.

Comp will be judged by a panel including myself.  You have one month; best of luck to all entrants.

Yesterday is History,
'Tis so far away
Yesterday is Poetry
'Tis Philosophy

Yesterday is mystery
Where it is Today
While we shrewdly speculate
Flutter both away

A Murder in Snow

( After Emily Dickinson )

A Murder in Snow -
 perched upon white
thousands of crow -
 gather to formulate

A Murder in the night -
 this patterned death
from windows we admire -
 their silent form of life

How Arrogant Are We

How arrogant are we
To equate human extinction
With the end of the world?

When we humans disappear
The stones and rocks will not care
For they will still be here

There’s a Certain Slant of Light ( after Emily Dickinson )

There’s a certain Slant of light
  as Eventide crests –
Kyanite empyrean
  O’re its flaming breasts

Deep repose, it doth evoke –
  Diminished to hour
Recalling – Memory extols
  ‘Neath shady bower

Life’s bounty, freely gathered
 – What may be found –
 Laid before a lambent throne
  Our daily accounts!

But, Woe! – What penalty doth wait
  ‘pon crepuscular siege
Of Outer Darkness eternal –
  Should no fruit be reaped?

Mirrored deception

As their senses having now been hewed
By a falsified canto, this lie was embued
Forthwith melodic line played to a slant
Twisting doublets across in lying chants,
-
Their noisy edges made into silent faces,
-
Subconscious mind trick pimping dark charm
Certain ethos coursing a foolish vein of harm,
-
Self-secluded in dark chamberless rooms,
-
Exposing mysterium as a false worth
Their slanders into a malicious curse
An anteroom opening celestial sense
Burns a symbolic fire death pretense,
-
The mind rebirth into middle pillar light
All are born to see this light in the night
As hope that life will so balance to right.

If I Could Leave One Legacy ( after Emily Dickinson )

If I could leave one legacy
  for future generations -
I would alter each destiny
  with available education;
That decisions stem from facts
  viably based in reason
  verses illiterate frustration
  in politics and religion

If I could leave one legacy
  for future generations
I would introduce the poetry
  of every Holy compilation
That thorough wisdom be gained
from an ancient form of art
  verses inaccurate translations
  manipulating the truth
~
