STANDING TALL AT CARNEGIE HALL

My first gig?
Benny Goodman
It’s a shame
I don’t remember much
First day jitters and all
I do remember that beautiful
RCA 44BX that I cradled
Man she was sexy
And me, chrome-plated perfection

That was 80 years ago
Chrome now somewhat pitted
I’m still active duty
but in an emeritus role
Don’t grace the stage much anymore
I dearly miss some of my mics
Much shorter life-spans they have
I can work for another 100 years.
Just keep some WD-40 handy.

Blessed I am
To have worked with the greats
Too many to mention them all
Some of my favorites?
Billie Holiday was the best!
As if she slow danced with me.
The opera singers were thrilling
Scary at times
Callas, Pavarotti, Price, Domingo
They made me tremble!

Some Rock ‘n’ roll acts were raucous
Jerry Lee nearly toppled me...
sent a piano bench flying my way
And Chuck made me nervous...
feared he’d trip on a cord.
I have never since heard humanity scream
as loud as they did for the Beatles.

I could go on forever.
But I’ll shut up for now.
Save the rest
for my soon-to-be published memoir.
“I Can Stand It.”

Okay, one last thing I need to address...
the horrid practice of mic dropping.
May I say that I and my fellow mic stands
consider this an appalling, ludicrous practice.
A cruelty visited on our friends
that we've sworn to protect.

See you at the Hall…
or not at all.

Almost God

Tonight, I was awakened
In the parlor where I sit
On top of the baby grand,

As the chain at my neck yanked
& I blinked, dazed from the light
That brightened the wallpaper.

I looked around, bewildered
And saw the shadows I cast
Dance ‘cross the willow pattern.

And here they were, two lovers,
Poets, I’d seen before, meet
Like baby’s breath in crystal.

The two sat close, side by side
At the piano bench, bowed,
So still like a whisper, I —

And she graced the keys, singing
To him, of love & heart’s flight
In the dear light from my shade.

How honored, to be privy.
As she turned to him, he smiled
To tell her she inspires.

They noticed the light flicker.
It was me, it was my heart;
What I felt, was almost God.

Sorry for inundating you with my stuff. I'm really enjoying the streams of imagination the listed items conjure. I've gone over word count on some but I'm just having fun! Awesome comp. sir Al.

Remote

Remote

I’m touched
again and again
as fat pads of fingers hover over my tattoos,
rub them away with lubricant,
with repetitive,
non-consentual
use.
I scream,
sometimes,
silent, voiceless.
My small, red beam emitting,
alarming them
to me
inside
as my outsides
are pushed deep
inside and
pop
out,
over
and over.
I’m touched
unless the evening
of the battery replacement,
I fall down the side of a sofa,
starved of light and trapped,
they leave the house unexpectedly
for a week,
perhaps two,
or lastly,
I short-circuit over this one,
I’m added to a skip
- drowning in my brothers, my sisters,
leaking acid on each other,
bleeding from our wounds,
wearing what is left of our tattoos as
souvenirs.
I am touched
in the most remote of ways.

COUCH POTATO FOREPLAY

I hear footsteps.
Surreptitiously sliding
In between sofa cushions
Another hide ‘n’ seek begins
A blast! For me anyway.
Invariably I next hear
“HONEY!
HAVE YOU SEEN THE REMOTE?”

Pillows start to fly
Subsequently a barrage
of every cuss word
From the huge creature's limited lexicon

Easing to the floor
rolling beneath the love-seat
I hang with a long lost Wii controller
till fat, groping fingers appear
moving violently to and fro.
Grasp yields fur balls, candy wrappers,
nothing more.

If the room were not dimly lit
and I more brightly colored
it would be game over in no time
Sometimes I encounter danger.
Unwelcome attention from a cockroach.
A sharp claw swipe from a furry paw.

Next, frantic dash for home base
“Babe it’s right here on the table.”
“No way! I swear I looked there first!”
“Sure you did old man.”
Ha ha ha...priceless!!

My mischief will not go unpunished
Buttons will be mercilessly  mashed so hard
And I will wince in exquisite pain
Worth it? Oh hell yeah!

Curtain Call

The camp outside the city strafed,
A milling ‘round the craters torn.
The refugees, the makeshift stoves,
And always children playing war.

They’ve only known of guns & death
Since they & all their friends were born.
Now more than half of them are gone,
There seems no symbol left for hope.

I recently was on a truck
That came in from the hills nearby.
The fighters poor of little else,
With boxes, sacks in scant supply.

The men unloaded, pulled me down
To bring me to a plywood shed
And drape me o’er a rope of hemp
Above a floor of tampered ground.

I suddenly was left alone
And felt so far away, my home,
The other side of rolling pass,
A stream, the horses fed on grass.

A moment, then all had gone still,
I heard no bursts, artillery.
Then sudden from the open door
A boy appeared, and then a girl!

“Come in my children, quietly,
I was so lonely, now there’s you.
Stay here & play & hide with me,
You bring back happy memories!”

Climbing A Ladder To Heaven🎄

Oh, how I love the snow, the holidays,
Th’ popcorn strings, stockings & color lights.
The caroling, the stable, manger plays,
With baby Jesus, matinees some nights.

It’s such a happy time this neighborhood,
Where we all know each other & the dog.
To give until it hurts & does some good,
Men stand around & grin & drink egg nog.

But just the other day before first snow
As Papa in the driveway parked the Jeep,
Then lifting, opened double garage doors,
Revealing me in tinsel three feet deep.

It’s now the time of year when I will be
The most popular helper ‘round the house,
To reach and help Papa put up the tree
Which cheers up everyone even the mouse.

The kids who laugh & run between my legs
All shout w’ glee when do we see the Clause?
The dog looks sad at me & starts to beg,
& puts its front legs up to rest its paws.

It’s Papa who’s outside by the garage,
Who calls for “Each one of you, take a box!”
The smallest ones race into the barrage,
To drag & trip as stuff falls out like socks.

Meantime, I’m lifted up & on the run,
& set my sturdy feet in flower bed.
Then Papa starts to climb up, rung by rung,
W’ string o’lights in hand, reaches my head.

Till end of day the roof at last is done,
His brood of six below look up in awe.
There’s Papa bathed in wonder; ev’ryone:
I hope this all will stay up till spring’s thaw!
