Caroling (from a eucalyptus tree)

Each spring as a child
when family parties
of holiday celebrations
were, by then
echoes in my head

I'd go a-caroling

while playing in the
fresh mud of the garden,
toes wriggling deep
alongside the sow bugs
that tilled the earth

tomboy that I was,
still in my Sunday best,
my voice would rise up
to the birds perched
on the backyard fence

as I'd go a-caroling

taking in the dappled sun
strained through the
branches of a eucalyptus
that had a tree house
where you could find me

a-caroling so free and easy
in that tree all breezy

in the crow's nest swaying
watching for pirates;
"Avast!" I'd call out, saying
to the cap'n far below
"Mom's calling us to lunch!"

and off we'd go a-caroling
just as fast as we could

back to my childhood where
scraped knees were kissed
and summers were bliss,
and all was safe for a while
within my mother's smile

Pit Of Cherry

Where
would I be
without you
my sweets an
infusion of warmth
the blush upon my cheeks

Bold
brave
beautiful
the vibrancy of me

Scarlet
feathers
tips of pearl
we are flying high
these outer skies soaring
deep the forrested valley's beneath

Clipping
clouds and
dodging rainbows
laughing as cupid aims his bow

A
beam
of sunlight
always peeking
out from my shadow

No
longer
of the lost
my wee bitty bit
we've been found
you and I forever bound

Our Peaceful Place...

Nights like this I dream of You and I drifting away into that peaceful place.

That place we talked about with the dark sand and navy blue ocean waters toppling and crashing against rocks abroad land.

The sea turtles you were oh so obsessed with. Studying the great masses and scenery. To experience this with you, no other place I'll rather be.

I grab your hand
Firm, tall, and bold I stand
Looking into your eyes
I cite these words,

"Forever my lady I'll never let go. A life without you would be a life no more. Give me a call and I'm on my way. My dear lady come join me in this peaceful place"

This peaceful place is for you and I.
When I'm not around our love can be shared in the sky. A quick smirk and sigh, "this is the life."

Here’s To You

To the lovers who dream of each other across time
To the emotions when they look up at starry skies
To those aching hearts that are filled with faith
May you look again upon your beloved’s eyes
Here’s to you…

To the dreamers and the thinkers of a brand new world
To their philosophy that aspires to think and be free
May their ideas bring light to struggling minds
May their notions fill humankind with harmony
Here’s to you…

To the child with great love being conceived tonight
To the mothers around the world giving birth
To the new babies taking their first breath
May you give us hope for a better healthy earth
Here’s to you…

To the preachers and the teachers who shed light
To their dedication and their passion for the truth
May the blessings from above fill you up with love
May your wisdom bring faith to our youth
Here’s to you…

To the composers who fill our hearts with song
To the poets who pour their words on every page
May you inspire us to better ourselves
May we find peace in our age
Here’s to you…

Here’s to you,
May the light of everlasting love,
Rain upon your soul with joy and grace,
Here's to you,
May the sight of everlasting hope,
Reign and make you whole in coming days.

Could've Been The Last Choice

As someone with
surfed-over sand
colored hair
once sang - "I dare you to move"

---

The thrum of a
pulse persists
that once hushed
itself;
in aches to go
un-thrumming
opting for both
"truth"
and "double dare"

neverminding two cans of molten aftermath

Knowing that no...
it is no basement beat
or snare
barely catching tails of
chords within old-hat
neighbors' hearing

It's double base pedal
throbs
and hooks
cymbals sparring...

...and that its tone
will find little
home
in their ears

But; to beat
and to beat still
it prevails

My best, your best

Good but not good enough
Constantly writing in search of that perfect line
Constantly trying to write a piece better than my last
Everytime I can feel it rise in me
Every day I feel it burning in me
Begging me to write it out
No matter how much I try, its always never good enough
It's not about my lack of motivation
It's not about my lack of words nor creativity
It's the need to grow
The need to be better
It’s the fear of being absolute
It rises in every writer, every poet
It burns inside every singer, in every artist
Begging to be written out
Begging to be said aloud
Begging to be drawn, painted and to be sang out
What I've written today is not my best
What I'll write tomorrow is no my best
Even if it rises inside of me
Even it it burns inside of me
As long as I can hold a pen, a paint brush, a microphone
I still haven't done my best
My best, your best
It dies with me, it dies with you
I'm the best, you're the best

Periwinkle

(a nursery tale)

Near a sleek interstate of the new Now
Of Today’s city glass towers’ gleam,
From the day’s perfect rise of Know How,
And Tomorrow of manicured dreams:

Stood the sprawl of an old shanty town
Where lush trees & green grass never grew;
Shown no mercy; a dry trodden frown
Like the tough shanty dwellers it drew.

But for all of a dirty-faced soul
Passing time in the cardboard & shake,
Moved an odd, mystic child of the shoal
Picking mussels & shells for the take.

And the name, Periwinkle, or Jill,
Who's dark days of childhood were all spent
On the fringe of the city’s landfill,
Gather’d pebbles & weeds as she went.

No one paid her a mind to collect,
Not a button or bow worth a cent.

And there never were colorful blooms;
Not a daisy, nor rose or a glad.
With bare feet in the mud many moons,
Not a violet or mum to be had.

But no one who knew Jill believed her.
She saw rain puddles each as a pearl
In re-flected sky drifting over,
And the specialness that filled the girl

Who could trust in the dump where she play’d,
That to walk in the sky’s dappled air
Brought to life buddings from seedlings raised
When she wore the bright blue in her hair.

And her mother would smile & then teased
How her “Jilly” did just as she pleased.

A little under the weather, a bit slow on the uptake am I today, so please excuse my late response.  And so thanks to our host for giving us all the opportunity in a competition that celebrates what few comps do it seems... the unbridled joy of a lighter expression of happiness.  I thank tmoj for my spot on the podium, and congratulate my moon child friend Luna, and our one-&-only Missy as cup winner!

See you all again soon in the celebration of friendly competition...
