MALT O MEAL
Mellow spice fragrance
Aromatic sweet coco
Leaves me reminiscent of
Memories of childhood cold mornings
Of warm cereal and milk

Herbs/Spices 1
Oregano
Green spice laces
the air in this place
a spiked savory haven
taken
in heated
heady
Venetian zest
hot, hot & heavy
pungent tastes
"Joy of the mountains"
I'll concur & attest
though infusions are best
without eating the rest
Vanilla
Sweet light alights
over buds
like bright tastes
of sunrises over snow
Thick paste slips you
tiny beans with sheer hints
balmy as it goes
***
For the spices comp. HOWEVER; I'm pretty into herbs and aromatherapy, so I'm not stopping here. It's a theme I wanted to explore anyway, a comp is just an excellent excuse. I'm including 2 flavors per poem, so I don't have quite as many little entries floating around.

Herbs/Spices 2
Saffron
Dutchess of flavor
queenly sung
notes float - refined
denoting honey-rich harmonies
by slender
prized scarlet threads
floral
fine
& bloody red
Cilantro
Polarizing - pungent
potent
Parsley's piquant cousin
with citrus tones
Or
disgustingly dramatic
dogmatic drivings
of soap down the throat
What is your vote?

Herbs/Spices 3
Lemon Zest
Cresting treats
in grated zest
adding aromas
from flavor
compressed
Minced summer savor
sun to ingest
Habanero
Tiny orange torrid tyrants
housing heatwaves
flavor fires
Clouting in bites
hot & stout
Chug some milk to bail you out

Thank you for allowing me haha! I know this overkill, but I've been delighted to write these personally (regardless of the comp). I know you said limitless, but if it's too much, please just consider my Bay Leaf as the primary contender, it's my favorite 😊

Herbs/Spices 4
Bay Leaf (West Indies)
Feral flavor
of far-gone ventures
Imbuing spice into
pirate pleasures
seeping freshly into
dirty
brigand breath
masculine notes
of muggy incense
Cinnamon
Scrolled up dusty
fragrant rolls
warmth dries & settles sweetly
welcome in your nose
like links to old
holidays at home

Herbs and Spices (I Remember When…)
I can still remember the days when I walked into the house,
And the aroma of spices and seasoning filled the air,
I remember being that young when grandma was cooking,
My wonderful memories I’m about to share…
I would walk into the kitchen and give my grandma a kiss,
Saying how good it all smelled as she prepared the food,
I can still see the herbs and spices in her delicate hand,
Mixing them into one of the many pots that stewed.
Then she would tell me stories about days of her youth,
Growing up and how she came to know their names,
How each one of them would enhance the flavors,
The art of the kitchen and how it could entertain.
But being just a kid at that time I didn’t understand,
That spices and herbs were more than just a routine,
They are part of family customs and cultural traditions,
That tell a story of where your ancestors had been.
This one, she’d say, comes from this part of the county,
It grows here because the soil is rich for this reason,
And she’d tell me tales about those “old market days”,
About herbs and plants they’d bring during the seasons.
The fragrances still resonate alive in my mind,
The taste and flor of each dish at the table,
My grandma’s smile asking if I wanted seconds,
And me usually saying yes just because I was able.
Now that I’m old and I look at my grandma’s fragility,
I still recall the herbs and spices in her delicate hand,
Now I seek the cooking advice from the little lady,
She still tells me stories that start “I remember when…”

Halal Cart on my Corner
Muslim dude from Egypt
Does wondrous things with chicken
Lamb is good too
I always get the chicken though
I kinda befriended him last winter
Neighborhood up in arms
That alone made me reach out
People always afraid of what they don't know or eat
All good for about a year
Neighbor folk slowly reached out
Steady steam of business
He gives a nice salad and grills the pita
Recently when getting my food he starts pushing religion
I'm about as religious as a dog pissing on a hydrant
Always believed it's a personal choice best left private
I don't crave his chicken anymore , we had our moment
